The U.S. Customs and Border Protection is preparing to launch a pilot program to scan the faces of drivers and passengers at Anzalduas Port near McAllen, Texas.

On Thursday the U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced plans for a new pilot program that will test out biometric facial recognition technology as part of an effort to identify fugitives or terror suspects. The Austin-American Statesman reported on the announcement:

Thanks to quantum leaps in facial recognition technology, especially over the past year, the future is arriving sooner than most Americans realize. As early as this summer, CBP will set up a pilot program to digitally scan the faces of drivers and passengers — while they are in moving vehicles — at the busy Anzalduas Port of Entry outside of McAllen, the agency announced Thursday.

I posted an article referencing this one, about tracking licence plates in the United States. This has gone even further now, and can't be ignored or blown off as just 'we're just keeping ourselves safe'. How can't this be an infringement?

These programs are reminiscent of mass surveillance systems established in Russia and China. The truth of the matter is that all three nations are taking different paths towards the same goal: control and monitoring of their population and suppression of critical thought or opposition.

If this will be used as border security then, I'll vouch for it.

However, this will without a doubt propagate down to tracking of every day Americans ( a la Communist China) ...

Pick your poison.

Yes, it's all been leading up to this, the big takeover.

What does the Man with everything want? MORE. In this case more power over the 99%. This may not end well.

EVERYONE SHOULD READ every time a law is proposed.

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

- Benjamin Franklin

It speaks volumes and holds weight even today. If we don’t remember this, hello communism... or worse

Haven't they been doing this in airports (federal property) for years?

The title is wrong.. it should be "U.S. Customs To Test Biometric Program To Scan Faces Of Drivers"

Not "Trump"

Its not that Trump and his administration is driving around with these scanners and installing them.

Yes, but under Obama it would have been 'Obama is face tracking people', the 'administration' part would be optional.

Now it's sacrilegious to mention Trump whilst in the Trump admin? The commander in chief assumed duties and responsibilities over the country and everything within it. If a leader doesn't have the integrity to say I was in charge when this happened, then he/she is no leader.

We have to take our shoes off because of the shoe bomber. We get pat downs on our crotches because of the underwear bomber. What’s this one for?

Just one more step toward 1984 styled fascism. Trump looks more like Big Brother every day.

It’s more of a multi-culti fascism, the majority of which was already in place. They pat down old ladies and children because they don’t want to hurt certain people’s feelings.

I'm surprised license plates have numbers instead of a barcode... easily scanned behind by one affixed to the front of a police cruiser.

OF course such a thing wouldnt be safe against hacking unless measures were made to not have holes in it from go... otherwise just another big mess like incorrect numbers etc from human error currently are.

It would save time imho... and not just time for law enforcement.

A special message for the general pop. It's amazing how in your face this stuff has become and people eat it up like it's the best thing since the fricking light bulb.

In public you do not have a right to privacy as far as being viewed on camera with exception of a restroom. when they do it 24 hrs a day you have a point.
