The Berlin Wall has now been down longer than it was up

TO MILLIONS the Berlin Wall—which as of today has been down for longer than it was up—was above all a symbol. It was a by-word for division and the post-war era in Europe. It played stage to an evolving caste of monumental historical figures: JFK, Willy Brandt, Walter Ulbricht, Ronald Reagan, Helmut Kohl. It gave way to German reunification and the birth of the euro.
With all the division in the world today - it's nice to remember what it was like when we fought division, not embraced it.

peace

You know what springs to my mind when I read things like this?

Who the hell keeps track of these things? Whose been marking the days off their calendar? Seems like an odd thing to do...

I remember the wall coming down but I guess I was too young to really get the significance of it.. only that it was a "big deal"

It was the reunification of Europe but the monsters swept in and made it into an invisible prison with about as much democracy as an Ant Farm.

My guess is, a citizen of Berlin. Perhaps somebody old enough to remember the wall going up?
When something has had a direct impact, you take an interest.

Perhaps... still, waking up and thinking "oh, today's the day that the Berlin wall has been down as long as it was up" seems a bit..... obsessive to me.

If you can believe it... he stood on a cherry picker, wearing a light up leather jacket and mimed badly to a song called "looking for freedom" as the Berlin wall was pulled down.. yes that actually happened.. no it was not an alternate reality... just the 80's

Oh and ETA: Yeah, pretty sure he's still alive..

The story at the time was that this announcement was a "mistake". He had read out something he was not supposed to read out, because the plan was to limit the opening and keep it under control.
Crowds took him at his word, insisted on going through the checkpoints, and the border was down.

David Hasselhoff is a legend in Germany, it's only you who feels ashamed of him.

I'm not ashamed of him, he's absolutely nothing to do with me whatsoever... just all seems a bit surreal on reflection . ..

Keeping track of history is obsessive?

That's weird.
