What a bad ass plane, my all time favorite. Ill never forget that dialog in the first Red Dawn movie. "Hell it was 5 to 1 and I got 4 of em".

Isnt this the plane that made the Iraqi pilots decide to eject on takeoff during Desert Storm?

Counting all F-15 models and combat, they're something like 106:0:3.

The over flights we used to get back in the 70s ALL used MAC and their tail numbers as callsigns. On a quite day, only 2 or 3,but on a busy day we could get as many as dozen or more, headed mainly for Frankfurt and Ramstein if I remember correctly.
RAF and Army (our army) had callsigns allocated to the pilot,so different aircraft could have the same callsigns.Either RAFAIR or five letters starting M....

We used to use SAM with the tail number.

Our version of that was ASCOT for Hercs etc based mainly at Lyneham.

Looks like the F-35 is going to a four digit number too. Just saw a video with one from Hill with four digits.

Never noticed that before. I just thought it was a mod for ground pounding. That is kinda slick.

We always used the four digits.

If a jet was made in 81, and it's tail was 81-0029, we named it "0029," or Balls-29.

We always referenced four digits.

Ours were never four. If it was 12668 it was always just 668. It was always the standard 5 on the tail, but it was always only three when referring to them.

I was always surprised the original modular designs never made any headway either.

.

Despite having a limited FOV, an IRST makes a hell of a lot more sense in the FAST pack than in a belly tank or hanging out on a pylon.
