I couldn't really decide! It was either that or black goo! The nanotech that will turn all into black goo.

I suppose that would explain all the oil and gas deposits. A previous civilization developed nano tech that turned all forms of flesh to black goo. The only thing they could think of doing was "space rock" the place from orbit. Killed most of the black goo bots and most life too. Then restart from scratch.

Myths of gods pass into story, then into legend. Flying thrones! Thunder bolts. Here we go around again! Confident in our ingenuity about to goo ourselves all over again. The wheel in the sky keeps on turning. A new Golden Age leading right back to the black goo!

Man, that is so depressing! Puppies and unicorns! And hugs! I like to think of the ascendance thing as the way out of the self destruction trap.

Yeah, I thought TPTB were demon worshipers trying to off us too! Man, isn't the universe a cold, mean enough place on its own without somebody in power trying to do you in too?

Eager beaver! (Does anybody actually say that?)
Dead by nano technology also nice.
We could take that a bit further: nano bots. All coordinated and a bit like the Futurama episode where Fry got worms.
Do you want to be healthier, fitter, smarter, ... or "pure"?

As long as it is not "pureed"! If we could become black goo and get to return back? That would be cool, I guess. "Oh, that? That is just TEOT! He's going through his black goo phase!"

"Eager beaver" is still a thing! But then again, so are crocs shows you how much I know!!

In a while crocodile!!

I'm chased by hordes of strippers, showgirls and porn stars.

I try to get away.......but not really.

Retelling a Chris Rock joke in your own words means you're only one Eddie Murphy joke away from being caught in an alley with a transsexual, on the bright side I'm not sure if I just told the joke or not...

But an interesting follow up thought: is a social/cultural vacuum possible?
Can I overcome indoctrination?

Sure in a society that doesnt have a monolithic hierarchical 'government' sort of apparatus (feeding down the social construct), although fat chance of that ever coming about by accident.

Note that even people that dont let their kids grow up on TV, when they go to school with all kids that do they still end up having it rub off on them.

People can overcome indoctrination just fine. Although to never succumb to it period is something the likes of sociopaths / psychopaths / hermits. Note that psychopathy doesnt inherently produce a person that hurts others, or is inherently diabolically selfish, but that its still a disease to the rest of society. There's a definition of insane where its the person who doesnt believe the same 'reality thing' as everyone else (where whether or not its 'true' is basically irrelevant).

Ah the Gray Goo. I contemplated that one, but zombie gender rights activism as the end of the world was hard to beat.

Strange you mention the concepts of anarchy and conformity in the same post... like no way anarchy is possible so conform. This is akin to the six minute brawl in They Live! About; No I don't want to wear any sunglasses... conform reproduce and consume still occur told to or not or the animals would have stopped a long time ago, the only reason they go extinct is they are way yummy to something else or something was way to yummy to them and they starve to death eaten it to extinction.

So that comes to would zombies eat zombies once everything is zombie or sink into the ground as a retrovirus until life managed to climb out of yet another primordial ooze only to opps here comes zombification again then rinse and repeat seems a meteorite gets tired of watching the show after awhile uggh not the zombie wave again hey Fred hold my beer I'm taking this $h!tshow out proper before it even gets started.

Here is my view of my own personal [chosen] doom. I think I have mitigated environmental/weather doom; if a hurricane kills us, it does. No help for it. Where I live we are strategically worthless; that means that anyone could take over this country, but there is no worth in doing so. I think humanity (or what it once was) has been re-setted before by an asteroid, or similar outside doom. I can't prepare for that.

I can only hope when TSHTF that we are ignored. We can live off the land/sea here. It won't be easy, but it is doable. I have prepared for that possibility.

I think the Earth will always survive. Humanity will probably be killed by a virus. Maybe a virus that was once buried under tons of ice in Antarctica; we seem to lurve to play with ancient viruses. Our bad.

We deserve our doom, imo. We are arrogant, irrational, violent creatures that think we are omnipotent. We are not. Our total time on this Earth is but a moment in its history. One thing I hope: I hope humanity can leave a monument or two which accurately describes what we were. Hey, we don't want creatures of the future to guess about us, right?

You're speaking as a first civilization sort... I hope that great pyramid, gobekli tepe and that place the Ancient Aliens hair guy pronounces as sexy woman is still around. :p

I think it interesting that few ever bother to recall that the hieroglyphs in the great pyramid is graffiti and the other pyramids as well as the civilization built out of it are a mimic to that previous culture not present when the next showed up and claimed it.

It's more like out of the woods, trees, and caves again after global extinctions where basic was needed and then after that is covered back onto that damned conceptual thinking where whew we're number one and lighting our farts like it's the best thing ever. At least it doesn't stink dude at least it doesn't stink... yeah and well with that action it seems somehow a less noble a gas than previous.

that's exATCTly what I'm talking about! There were worlds and civilizations before us. They wrote, they lived, they loved and their works are there before us, but we don't really strive to understand those works, do we? No. We view them as history, which relegates them to the archives of the past.

History is a living thing. It reaches forward and backward, almost a quantum/relativity entity. The present is static, the past is liquid and the future is a vapor.

We, all of us, are in a position of making our claim, writing our story for those of the future to read. But what do we do? Do we scribe our loves and likes and dislikes and thoughts and dreams on aluminium tablets? No. We watch Jerry Springer. We watch [Real] Housewives of Beverly Hills, and gnash our teeth and stamp our feet about this and that housewife and chortle when Andy calls them out. Is this life? Is this a celebration of what we are? What is good about what we are -- as a species -- right now? We have art and beauty and music and inspiration but who cares about that?

Dr. Phil is relevant. Mozart is passé.

Ideological poison I suppose... once power reaches a certain point then the sharing and distribution are greedily held back using the very cultures fears against them from progression instead of going global as a civilization where we are taught we cannot be enriched by other(alien) cultures which is a bold face lie to anyone holding intelligence of course that intelligence by the very same people is not heralded it puts the obsurd on display as an excuse as to why it must be that way in the classic move of if you make someone believe it is true before stating it in a way not discoverable they will believe it is their idea and that you agreeing with them in that held belief held onto tenaciously now being validated by you even though you planted the propaganda there for them to come to that conclusion to begin with... so when they say dude humans are too stupid and lazy to advance to a higher civilization then that shoveled dance of fools comes to mind and then say sigh I guess you are right and then nothing actually progresses as it should.

It is a very dishonest thing and if such is held up as hey this is a lie we are not like this we do not want to emulate this as a standard or accepted behavior stop presenting us with propaganda that that is the face of humanity... then their excuse well thats what everyone wants to see just look at the ratings... it becomes that plausible deniability that allows the buck to be passed without actually doing anything about it that everyone looks for to run away from the responsibility for things being the way they are instead of achieving the greatest of human potiential if only we are all inspired to do so instead of hedge bets and funds on the lowest common denominator because human behavior is easy to manipulate and form into predictable habituation to be able to have secure markets and keep status quos going that even allow the profiting off of human misery and planet wide pollution.

Well its what you want... yeah yeah but it certinally isnt something we actually need so the excuse is invaild.

Weather is also a wonderful option. But also more a local disaster. I don't think it can make a global Doom! scenario. Unless you combine it with "London under water" and volcanos and earthquake and tsunamis and hurricanes...
The Earth strikes back combo.

First -- that is probably the most amazing and profound paragraph-long sentence I've read here since.......... EVER!
Okay, try not to do that, because most people will just skip past it. I read it and understood, and I think you have a good handle on the long view of humanity.

You are considering humanity as viewed from afar as a planetary rating. Say, for instance, there is a galactic council that rates the viability and efficiency of an emerging quasi-intelligent civilization.

And.......... you're right........ we focus on the wrong things, the market influence, the interest rate, instead of the rate of interest about each other and among each other. There is a quote that has been attributed to Einstein: "It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.” I'm not positive that he said that, but it certainly sounds like his take on things. Regardless, it is true, imo. Also, our humility has fallen short of our humanity. Our humanity has fallen short of our potential, and we appear to be spiraling down insofar as our ability to be part of nature, to continue to evolve in a positive manner which enhances our survivability. No, quite the opposite. We become increasingly vulnerable, to generalize the species. So, our "doom index" becomes directly proportional to our vulnerability to the doom of the day.

In short, more stuff can kill us, or at least many of us, than ever before, and our response to that is to buy more frozen pizzas.

Agree. I tend to group a lot of Geophysical stuff into the general umbrella of "weather" and I shouldn't. Earthquakes aren't "weather".

I think two serious contenders for the human doom index are: (1) massive caldera explosion(s). Yellowstone, for example, might pretty much, over time, wipe out a significant population, and..... (2) magnetic pole shift. Some say it is a no-biggie, others say it's significant. I cannot imagine how it wouldn't have critical effects, particularly in our current internet-dependent civilization. Imagine that if the internet died, that people would die as a consequence. WTH???????? How did we allow that to happen??

It wouldn't even take a 'proper' Super-Volcano to go off out of no where next month and trigger enough global coling / crop devastation to wipe out a good several billion in a few years (just about the time it was starting to clear up). And they aren't exactly uncommon neither...

It is well known that Einstein wanted physics to be of benefit and when they turned splitting the atom away from a sort of stable means of cheap energy production into a weapon he was livid enough that the FBI got paranoid and started watching him for subversive activities.

People like him and Tesla are the dazzle them with brilliance snatching those things from the aether for progression and when it comes to the government side it turns into a baffle them with bull$h!t. It's a weird thing like the FCC being created from the mass paranoia of the War Of The Worlds broadcast where people thought it was real and wigged out setting disclosure and other science in a way back machine cause the conclusion was drawn that the fragile little minds of the masses cant deal or cope with things especially truth so we have these agencies all over the world to sniff around do the masses know what we know? Where theyve become extremely paranoid of the people they are supposed to work for which means it has been out of our hands for a long time and things veiled purposefully in a they cant handle the truth so the dance just continues and that economic nonsense and saying the issues over and over and yet never do anything about the issues in a back and forth for decade after decade... because of the money influence and back door lobby deals to ping pong the same stuff knowing the market effects... moral fiber... moral fiber is first of all not dishonest so it falls flat immediately from go... in a no win situation.

P.S. I like TLDNR
