This is from zerohedge:

The Russian Ministry of Defense has released footage showing a precision strike against terrorists in the northwest Syria province of Idlib, following the downing of an Su-25 jet. The pilot, Roman Nikolaevich Filippov safely ejected - only to be killed by militants on the ground, according to the Ministry.

I've read in a few places it wasn't so precision and they hit some civilians too. That can't be true though, right? It's only the US that kills civilians in war. Everyone else has a 0% collateral damage rate.

the syriacivilwarmap is actually not nearly as good as Syria livemap. Livemap actually links to the sources, and provides the video or images or hyperlinks within the event box. civilwarmap is just a cheap copy that provides no sources.

If Turkey engages a fellow NATO country, it will be a bad thing. However, what do they have to loose?
Turkey has become extremely militant since Adolf Erdagon.
BTW, what gives with the sombrero and Groucho Marks eyes?

This Is scary, Russia will without a doubt have a strong armed response to this incident, regardless if their pilot was in the wrong or not. Shooting down the jet is bad enough, but to murder the pilot and parade his body around for the media, is taunting, and foolish on their part. Interesting to see the response that they deliver.

Ok.. Everyone keeps talking about shoulder launched missles.. But in the video that violator1 posted on page one of this thread.. The "here is another video, I don't think the pilot even saw it coming" one.. You can clearly (well...barely) see another plane right behind the one that comes down. It comes in from behind, swooshes in close and then flies away at a higher trajectory. The camera guy even looks for it at one point a minute later. Did this plane shoot down the Su-25? And if so.. Who what when where and why? (Sorry I don't have time for a more comprehensive post. Running late this morning.)

There were two Su-25s involved in the attack. The second aircraft was his wingman. He stayed in the area for a little while after the first was shot down.

if it was shot down in syria by turkish forces yes it would be very bad because russians were invited turks were not. if they going to start poking bear nato needs to either rein them in or kick them out of nato.

The second aircraft in the video is also an Su-25. It is the wingman of the Su-25 that was shot down.

The Russian pilot took his own life with a grenade as his hiding place was being overrun. Grenades are carried as standard in the combat vest that the pilot wears along with his pistol.

See 6:47 for Russian pilot in Syria showing a reporter the grenades in his combat vest.

Video showing the point where his position was being overrun. The video I am posting does not show his body.

The Syrian air defense forces, used old Soviet era pre-S300 air defense systems to shoot down the Israeli F-16.
These systems were upgraded with more modern electronic components to replace out of stock old parts, but remain substantially the same missile system with the same radar and the same engagement envelop.

Most probably the shot was a well placed S-75M with updated mobile launchers. If S300 were used, no Israeli plane would have made it home!

Of course they wouldn't have. Because everyone knows the S300 can shoot down anything that moves and is the greatest air defense system ever built. [/sarc]

Doesn't look like anyone is concerned about Russian air defenses in syria. How did Israel respond they raided 4 more locations near Damascus as retailiation. Russian air defenses in syria have failed everyone's flying all over the country. US,France,Turkey, and Israel control the skys.

Not to mention this is the first Israeli plane shot down, despite many raids against those same defenses over the last few years.

Any missile battery can pull off a hit against any type of aircraft. The SA-6 in Yugoslavia showed that. It just takes a smart operator, and good timing.

And that isn't even taking their S-400 or S-500 into consideration.

Thankfully we have a few weapons capable of penetrating this system, but there is no doubting Russia's competitiveness in the space battlespace. After all, we're still using Russian rockets to put payloads in orbit.

Yet some in this country still believe it is a good idea to make these people our enemies instead of allies.

If it were up to me, I'd dump the lame-duck EU and pivot to Russia and maybe even China.

I wonder if there is any true in this or just Iranian baseless allegations.

An Iranian government official claimed earlier this week that its Russian-made air defenses were compromised by Moscow, leaving Iran and its allies defenseless against Israeli airstrikes. An engineer with Tehran's Ministry of Defense alleged that codes forcing anti-aircraft missiles to treat hostile Israeli fighters as friendly were sold to Tel Aviv, effectively neutralizing Syria and Iran's S-300 surface-to-air missile systems.
...
The article doesn't say what the Iranians mean by "codes", but Tehran apparently means the Identify Friend or Foe codes that aircraft transmit to avoid being shot down by their own air defenses. The S-300 missile, an older surface-to-air missile similar to the American Patriot, was identified as the affected system. The S-300s not only would refuse to engage the Israeli planes, the report says, but also they wouldn't give notice that the planes had taken off from nearby Israel, giving Syrian troops time to prepare.
