What if you designed the airframe to deliberately disintegrate...up to a point?
Ablative Armoured Airframes could be designed which absorb the friction and intentionally detach once a specified threshold is reached for each
Ablative cell / armour component?
Imagine a multi-layered, honeycomb-like structure, each hex cell able to detach and reveal a fresh, cold cell beneath the spent cell...this would add
more weight granted, but for an airframe designed to be reusable, this would allow the craft to survive the extreme heat intact, and return on
significantly less fuel than would be the case with fixed / solid airframes.
Just a thought.
