Fear is rising among Democrats over the prospect that President Donald Trump’s hard line on immigration might ultimately cost California a seat in Congress during the upcoming round of reapportionment.

Top Democrats here are increasingly worried the administration’s restrictive policies — and the potential inclusion of a question about citizenship on the next U.S. census — could scare whole swaths of California’s large immigrant population away from participating in the decennial count, resulting in an undercount that could cost the state billions of dollars in federal funding over the next decade and, perhaps, the loss of one of its 53 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The fears are well-founded: According to the population formula used by Congress to distribute House seats every 10 years, California is currently on the bubble in 2020, on the verge of losing a seat for the first time in its history.

www.politico.com...

It seems Obama in 2010 changed the census from and took of questions about citizenship status.

Trump is reinstating that question.

To me this makes sense; the census is used to figure out how many representatives a state has, and in part how much federal money that state receives.

Only citizens should be counted for those decisions.

Democrats are worried this will lower the population of California on the census, and cost them a seat and money.

Isnt that basically an admission that they know that non citizens filled out the 2010 census and illegitimately inflated Californias numbers?

So the dems are fighting against any measure that would end that corruption and get an accurate count.

Who would have thought?

Well I believe it is the left leaning Politico and Dems that feel this is revenge from trump.

I dont call it revenge; I call it fixing a system that was designed to cheat.

Why would democrats be against making sure we get an accurate count of citizens in the country?

A question about citizenship on a census that could cost a sanctuary state billions in funding?

Winning!

Too bad the census isn't for determining citizenship but for determining how many people live in our country.
The neighborhoods will suffer if it's under reported. I'm sure trump is all about that #. Make brown people suffer.

So upholding the law is revenge? Who knew?

Do you realise how silly that sounds?

Why is it important? it's only going to result in all the figures being wrong. No one will even open the damn door now. It's not going to make the Mexicans move.
America is never going back to being a white nation. If it ever was. Get used to it.

I fail to see how a question about citizenship status could be seen as a threat to anyone who has completed all of the proper requirements for entry into the country.

Nothing to hide means nothing to fear, right?

Those who are opposed to it:

A recent request by the Department of Justice to add a question on citizenship to the 2020 census could threaten participation, and as a consequence, affect the allocation of federal money and distribution of congressional seats.

The Atlantic

They state flat out that they are worried that an accurate count would affect the funds received and congressional seats apportioned. If there are illegal immigrants being used to calculate those numbers, then that is where the problem lies, not in ensuring those elements are excluded.

You mean your trying to use a census story that has nothing to do with voting to sell your propaganda.

It was never the law.

Trump won't be able to run in 2020. He'll be in jail making deals with license plates. LOL

See there's the disconnect. We don't want a white America we want Americans of ALL cultures, as long as they're legal of course.

The census is used for many things; one of them is determining how many seats in the house states should get based on how many citizens are in that state.

I am sure you would like to see this system cheated for Californias benefit, thereby screwing over black and brown and white citizens of this country in other states that get less seats and federal money.

Oh, but you dont care about those people, do you?

Our representation in government is determined by population. A state with a lot of ILLEGALS is getting more representation than it rightfully deserves by ignoring citizenship laws. It has nothing to do with making people suffer. If you want representation, you need to be a legal citizen in the country. PERIOD.

Nothing

It is mandated by Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution and takes place every 10 years. The data collected by the decennial census determine the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives and is also used to distribute billions in federal funds to local communities.
