DARPA’s Collaborative Operations in Denied Environment (CODE) program aims to extend the capability of the U.S. military’s existing unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) to conduct dynamic, long-distance engagements of highly mobile ground and maritime targets in contested or denied battlespaces. Multiple CODE-equipped unmanned aircraft would navigate to their destinations and find, track, identify, and engage targets under established rules of engagement—all under the supervision of a single human mission commander.

Right now, the number of UAVs in a swarm is rather low, but the UI and basic intelligence were meant to be developed first. The idea here is to allow a single person to operate a swarm of UAVs with specific instructions in as simple an interface as possible. They have repeated in multiple press releases "with a wave of the hand."

The interface finally does look better than the old, almost 90s graphics tech that has been running around for some time.

The ability for the UAVs to operate and navigate in contested environments appears to be one of the big deals here. If the UAVs can maintain a coherent swarm while being jammed, attacked, etc. then I'm impressed. We shall if they can extend this to larger swarms (probably) and even heterogenous swarms (called multi bots by academics).

Even so, getting the branches to adopt this might be a challenge.

They won't have a problem getting it adopted. Especially if they use it with the aircraft released drone swarms.

I would think a basic software setup and individual package upgrades for each of the other services.Problem maybe in having different types of UAV,s used.

Seems like the military is going to have to start hiring Starcraft players.

What makes you think they haven't already?
