While scientists already knew that about a third of the surface of Mars contains shallow ground ice and that its poles harbor major ice deposits, the research published on Thursday described thick underground ice sheets exposed along slopes up to 100 metres tall at the planet’s middle latitudes.

The deposits were found at seven geological formations called scarps, with slopes up to 55 degrees, in the southern hemisphere and one in the northern hemisphere. “You can go out with a bucket and shovel and just collect as much water as you need."

Maybe this is part of the reason there is so much attention focused on Mars?

Little by little the reasons come out!

Awesome news!

2nd thread, Space (source: Steep slopes on Mars reveal structure of buried ice.

1st thread, Space (source: Deep, buried Purple Glaciers Spotted on Mars.

This is an interesting topic but three threads all in the Space forum is a bit much. MSM is not that much of a reliable source. Even the science sites, *sigh*, go for the "glam, flashy, headline grabbing" articles. Anyway, blue/purple ice, 100 meters down, may go on for miles. Might be used for humans when colonization happens. Not that we have been to Mars (wink, wink), or know how to extract water from dirt in little atmosphere. But it is fun to dream!
