Actually, it's our refusal to enforce immigration law. Despite what many seem to think, you do not became American just by setting foot on US soil.

The statue was a gift from France and reflects French ideas of what America was at the time.

Agreed, those were the times of the founding fathers and their ideals of what America "was."

All I'm saying is that today, the statue should probably be removed, and replaced with something more appropriate

closer in theme to Donald Trump's idea of America,

like this version,

Then the immigrants wouldn't be so confused, and jump into their rickety boats to float over to this land.

The symbols of "welcome" is what is confusing everybody.

What should be removed is that silly poem, which was attached to the statue at a later date. The statue was intended to be a beacon of liberty, not a beacon of unfettered immigration.

The Statue was a gift from France in the late 19th century.

But please, keep talking

Yes, I know, you thought you were being clever and pulling one over on us stupid flyover hicks.

Herp, derp and all that.

Jolly good show old chap.

No just highlighting the history. An opportunity to both pont out and to learn more myself. For example:
en.wikipedia.org - Monroe Doctrine...

The US stepped in and condemned the assault on the Americas from European powers in 1823, principally by opposing any attacks on independent states. It didn't have the power to enforce the olicy and several examples proved that to be the case. It's still interesting and also makes me wonder if the intent of the US was pure or a manifestation of more sinister motives. It was cemented as doctrine during/after the civil war when Mexico was conqured by Napoleon III. The US set up a army on the border and demanded htey leave. They did leave. But as to my suspicion there were slimy motives behind this, I provide this:
en.wikipedia.org - 1887 Constitution of the Kingdom of Hawaii...

...The document denied the King most of his personal authority, empowering the legislature and cabinet of the government. These anti-monarchists, known as the Hawaiian League, were mainly white men of North American origin, and they quickly appointed themselves as government officials, providing themselves with almost complete control of the government

More here:
en.wikipedia.org - Kingdom of Hawaii...
en.wikipedia.org - Overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii...

...This new constitution benefited the white, foreign plantation owners.[31] With the legislature now responsible for naturalizing citizens, Americans and Europeans could retain their home country citizenship and vote as citizens of the kingdom.[32] Along with voting privileges, Americans could now run for office and still retain their American citizenship, something not afforded in any other nation of the world[33] and even allowed Americans to vote without becoming naturalized.[34] Asian immigrants were completely shut out and were no longer able to acquire citizenship or vote at all.

Holy damn. Reading this. This is echoing what happened in Crimea with the Russian soldiers, I dare to ask?

The overthrow efforts were supported by United States Government Minister John L. Stevens with an invasion of U.S. Marines, who came ashore at the request of the conspirators.[58] Advised about supposed threats to non-combatant American lives and property[59] by the Committee of Safety, Stevens obliged their request and summoned a company of uniformed U.S. Marines from the USS Boston and two companies of U.S. sailors to land on the Kingdom and take up positions at the U.S. Legation, Consulate, and Arion Hall on the afternoon of January 16, 1893. 162 sailors and Marines aboard the USS Boston in Honolulu Harbor came ashore well-armed but under orders of neutrality.

Visit hte link and read. This is history repeating itself. My god.

Agreed , but the poem that was added after the design, build and commemoration of the statue has nothing to do with it. However the poem added does have an interesting story. Unfortunately it's not related to the Statue of Liberty, might want to take a minute and learn its history.

To comment on the OP, I admire a president that speaks succinctly, but I personally think he could have done more on emphasis. I have been to 7 countries in Africa, 3 countries in the Middle East (great places to live if you like wiping your arse with your hand) and traveled a good chunk of Central/South America (went around El Salvador it was too dangerous) in the mid 80's on my way to Colombia and related areas. While a lot of folks on this board may have traveled to the Islands or Canada or Mexico for Holiday, I traveled, worked and lived in a lot of these places. I can say the President understated the true state of most of those countries.

A better description would be Effing S___hole's.

So I believe our President acted quite admirably for a person of his position to convey a realistic description that was easy for his constituents to picture without having to actually experience the pleasure of having to travel/live in those places.

Believe me, there is no place like home and may God continue to Bless the United States of America.

News are being controlled by big rich man. So whatever news saying they must provide real proof that trumps said it. Otherwise they say things and dump people follow news thinking they can trust them. Do research before you post anything. I couldn’t find anywbere about trump saying “#hole”. Also why news are running this news on tv because they want to keep people mind away from real problem which is “ take over the internet” so pay close attention what happening over the internet power. a reply to: Grambler

So Trump rather than like a man apologize for his racist remarks is actually denying he said them!

If nothing is wrong with what he said then why is he denying he said it. He should be proud he said it and repeat it so his cult members can maybe start chanting it

CNN, MSNBC, DURBIN, and all liberals are devastated by Trump's statements, AND his denial. It's not done by accident. You should be used to seeing this "trap" work so well, so frequently, WillTell.

I don’t understand “Make America Great Again” anyways.

When was it great? When there was segregation? When women were thought of as inferior to men in the work place? When we were throwing Japanese-Americans into internment camps? When African-Americans were getting lynched in their front yards? Seriously. When was America “great” for people other than white evangelicals?

I think some observers said it the best -

If those countries aren't sh*tholes why don't Democrats agree with sending them back?

Those of you who are left leaning, really detach from your emotions and think about that question...

^^^^^^

Trumpites at their best. Immature comments about an ex-president while crying incessantly whenever someone bad mouths Trump.

No crying here!
Im LMAO at the tears of the clowns

We are only just begun.
To make America great again.
We all heard what Obama said in Russia to their top official. That's collusion.
We all heard what he said and did in America. That is what you would expect from a foreigner trying to topple a great country.

There is no other explanation.

Soooo.... are you seriously attempting to say that Obama was a foreign agent trying to undermine the USA? Seriously? Because if you are then I have a lot of hysterical laughter for you.

The hyena laughs hysterically, right up until its throat is ripped out by the preditor who is not fooled by nervous laughter. Enjoy the balance of your day

Trump is trapping himself in the lies and scandals swirling around him

There's a new one where he paid off a porn actress! Its almost daily some sordid scandal or some depraved statement form his mouth or a blatant lie comes from his words or some other embarrassment

Report: Trump Lawyer Paid Porn Actress $130,000 For Silence Just Before Election

A lawyer for President Donald Trump arranged a payment of $130,000 to a former adult film actress in October 2016, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journalciting sources familiar with the matter.

I wonder what will happen next week

Logically, the only reason he would have to deny saying is if he hadn't said it anonymous sources are, once again, liars...

Funny that, if our POTUS didn't say it, I'm not sure who'd be more disappointed... you or me, for entirely different reasons obviously.

But..don't you get it?

God blesses you, when you bless them. You give to the poor, the disadvantaged, the helpless. Like the poem says, give me those who really do need help.

That's the Christian faith.

If you just let in those that can help you, only those that bring wealth, and skills and talents, then you're trying to take the blessings into your own hands. At that point, God turns away from the land. The Father then says, ok, have it your way, see how far you get.

Those that are poor, bring wealth in the form of blessings from God himself.

Those that are rich, bring money, so they can pay and buy services from you, so you can work for them.

Isn't it better to take in a mix of people, to cover all the bases?

I haven't heard your apology for generalizing that people of colour aren't capable of making the abstractions that you are capable of yet. Where's that?

Lindsy Graham says he gave trump a piece of his mind over his comments.

Following comments by the President, I said my piece directly to him yesterday. The President and all those attending the meeting know what I said and how I feel. I’ve always believed that America is an idea, not defined by its people but by its ideals.

The American ideal is embraced by people all over the globe. It was best said a long time ago, E Pluribus Unum – Out of Many, One. Diversity has always been our strength, not our weakness. In reforming immigration we cannot lose these American Ideals.

www.breitbart.com...-comment-called-mexico-a-hellhole-in-2013/

But oh wait, Graham in the past called Mexico a hellhole and said we couldn't take all people in these holes in.

The people coming across the southern border live in hellholes. They don’t like that. They want to come here. Our problem is we can’t have everybody in the world who lives in a hellhole come to America

There are 11 million people coming through the southern border ‘cause they come from countries where they can’t find work, and life is miserable. So it seems to me that if you can control who gets a job you’ve gone a long way in controlling illegal immigration. Because as long as the jobs are available in America you can’t build a fence high enough to stop people

Notice too how his 2013 comment is competely oppoisite of his comment yesterday.

More faux outrage and hypocrisy.

European settlers did just that centuries ago.

They just came in boats, set foot on the land, and became Americans.

That's how it was done.

When did they stop taking in these refugees?

When they changed skin color?

Again, if you just give people enough time they will show you what immigration is really all about to them.

So you are saying the founders just came here and took land, so now this country deserves to have open borders.

America is bad, it deserves punishment.

We got ya.

No, much simpler, much more mundane reason for the changes in policy... we had American occupying the US territory from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific Coast and all points between. The Indians were beat down and no longer a threat, the English had stopped trying to bring us back under the Crown's boot, and Mexico had been pushed south of the Rio Grande and no longer were trying to hold New Mexico territory, rail lines connected the coasts and industry was suddenly more eager for trained and skilled workers than raw musclepower... America, in short, had claimed the new world and no longer simply needed warm bodies. We had found the luxury of discriminating in who we let it. "Ask not what the US can do for you, answer to what you can do for the US."

Wrong, they came here and built a country and cities from a wilderness. Now people want to come in and live off the fat of that land, fine but let them be at least to some degree educated or at least have a desire to assimilate and not start hating on us the minute they set foot here. We have to stop importing poverty and the people with a poverty mindset. Some people just want to come here to live off the system because they cant where they are from. We are under no obligation to fix the worlds problems.
