They're used to long days. A regular mission can last 14 hours or more.

No, it was a misconfiguration with the pins. The computer was showing them out of configuration, but they were in the correct configuration for launch.

awe so most likely the difference between the word "pull" and "poll". makes sense when i think of it that way. thanks zaphod i always appreciate your replies even if i dont always reply to them.

It was kind of funny because they forced the configuration, and later someone said they wanted to reset them and pull them again, and the launch director just sat there without saying a word for two or three seconds.

Well it launched.
They burnt off most the paint, but it launched.

Before...

After...

I totally forgot it was launching today

That burning of the paint job didn't look normal... I wonder if it is.

Certainly looked like it was on fire. Never seen that happen. You could clearly see the paint burning off.

Edit: biggest tip off was BLACK Smoke. Not the white smoke fom the bottom from rocket exhaust. Must have had a bit of fuel vapors on the hull. Or high Oxygen concentrations.

It looks normal for the Delta IV. I only watched two other launches, and both were the Heavy configuration, but at ignition both had the flame crawl up the side of the rocket like that.

Here's an explanation for the fireball at launch.
