The Foreign Office has turned down a request from the Ecuadorian government to grant the WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, diplomatic status as a means of breaking the stalemate over his continued presence in the UK.

The development comes amid reports that Assange – an Australian who has been holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy for more than five years – has recently become a citizen of the South American state.

If awarded the status of a diplomat, it is thought, Assange could obtain certain rights to legal immunity and might be able to leave the embassy in Knightsbridge, and eventually the UK, without being arrested for breaching his former bail conditions.

Why doesn't he please with the Trump administration? Doesn't he have a lot of support with conservatives and the like? Britain is far less forgiving to Assange in my opinion. It's coming up what? 8 years since he's been holed up in that embassy? It's all gotta get to a climax at some point. Can't stay there for too much longer imho.

There are a few threads pointing to JA being moved from the embassy and flying to "somewhere warm"

Who knows? Lot's of disinfo and forum slides going on. The waters are muddied.

As the Swedish arrest warrant for Julian Assange was withdrawn last year the British government should allow him to leave as the charge of breaching bail conditions for an alleged crime that is no longer is being prosecuted is hardly worthy of being followed up.

This soap opera has gone on long enough , Free Assange.

Well done Britain. This idiot needs putting in his place. He has been nothing but a burden to us, even costing the tax payer with having to have police keep tabs on the situation. Leave us Julian, go back to Australia, Ecuador, an American prison, anywhere but here. Who do you think you are messing with American and British security? No, you are not a celebrity, just another loser, perhaps even a raping jerk.

Actually the Swedish courts dropped the case but one of the alleged victims is furious at that and still claims he raped her while she was asleep with no condom

I am not saying he is guilty just pointing out the case dropped does not mean he is innocent

Actually.. it was found out that the woman in question had been involved with extreme womens rights groups and was caught having a "good time" with Assange on instagram the day after the alleged rape. She even mentioned him in the description..... writing "the best people in the world".
She was used as attack on Assange to discredit and capture him. They failed.

Diplomatic status just cant be granted by one country. The country where the diplomatic status is to apply must also agree to the appointment., If the country does not agree the person does not have diplomatic immunity.

Secondly only heads of missions have full diplomatic immunity. Staff members have varying degrees of immunity and generally only apply when they are engaged in official duties.

Assange being given Ecuadorian citizenship changes nothing.

Finally people have argued that Assange / Ecuador have legal standing to sue in the ICJ for breaching diplomatic norms under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Here is the part they ignore. The ICJ does not have compulsory jurisdiction, meaning if they issue a ruling a country can ignore the ruling. A country that ignores an ICJ ruling can be referred to the UN Security Council for action. However a permanent member of the security council can veto any action and I dont see the UK nor the US allowing an ICJ ruling to go through.

The only known charges against Assange are from the UK government. When Assange fled to the embassy he violated his bond agreement.

Even after all of this Assange is in the exact same position he was in last week.

Says the opinion of one man who is in the minority.

Assange owes the UK and USA no loyalty.

And unlike you I dont blindly trust my government. I want someone to expose the rot.

Complains about cost of a criminalized, complains about Assange based on bogus charges ALREADY tossed out by Swedish courts... then praises UK for denying attempt to negotiate freedom = WEAPONS GRADE IRONY

TACTICALLY SPEAKING... Assange was doing himself no favors by intimating he had Intel level knowledge of pedophiles in high places... important topic... but made his release completely untenable because there's so much despicable horrific abuse in the corridors of power.

There are any number of highly placed folks in .gov in U.S. and EU, that would rather have a nuclear war... than be outed as pedophiles.

...ponder that for a few minutes. That's who and what we are dealing with.

The charges in Sweden were not thrown out. They were dropped by the prosecutor with a caveat (bolded)
Swedish prosecutors drop Julian Assange rape investigation

Swedish prosecutors have dropped their preliminary investigation into an allegation of rape against the WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, bringing an end to a seven-year legal standoff.

The decision was taken after prosecutors concluded that “at this point, all possibilities to conduct the investigation are exhausted”, Sweden’s director of public prosecutions, Marianne Ny, said on Friday.

“In order to proceed with the case, Julian Assange would have to be formally notified of the criminal suspicions against him. We cannot expect to receive assistance from Ecuador regarding this. Therefore the investigation is discontinued.

“If he, at a later date, makes himself available, I will be able to decide to resume the investigation immediately.”

The charges in Sweden, never amounted to anything ... beyond slander. The only reason the case was taken, was to "extradite" Assange to the US. The time frame to come up with actual charges ran out, and so did the case ... it would always have been thrown out of actual court.

Yeah I ahve seen that lie repeated a lot. It usually accompanies Ganges lies about being sent to Gitmo (he cant), being charged with Treason in the US (He cant because he is Australian and not American) in addition to facing the death penalty (he cant since no possible crimes carry that as a punishment).

Raping a woman and then trying to deflect by using the US is just sad.

Either way Assange has always been free to leave the embassy. He violated UK law by jumping bail and as such they have a valid legal case against him. Sweden did not drop throw the charges out as claimed. They were dropped and there is a difference.

If it would always be thrown out of court then why not man up and face his accusers?

Extraditing Assange to the US is a whole lot easier from the UK since we have an independent bilateral agreement outside the EU system. No such agreement exists with Sweden, placing the full weight of the EU system in place.

Youre just an uneducated, political baffoon ... all you need, is to look up older cases, there is one I have in mind for example. Which serves as a precedense.

The "woman" in question, goes on her own accord with Assange, to his Hotel room ... for the purpose of sexual intercourse. Claiming "rape" after the fact, is not a viable legal term.

ignorantia iuri non excuisat.

Just to make my position clear, I have zero respect for Assange here. Americans have used "prostitutes" to hook men, since way back when ... and Assange, was a man that was "in demand". The man should have the brains not to touch them ... he didn't.

and yet none of the cases deal with an attempt at diplomatic immunity. But feel free to keep calling me a political buffoon when im not in politics.

Secondly as I stated the case was not thrown out of court which makes a fundamental difference in the argument.

That's rubbish. Assange committed a criminal offence in the UK by jumping bail. He needs to go through due legal process just like any other bail absconder. His celebrity status must not be used as a defence.

Sentencing guidelines

In addition, a diplomat is someone who is recognised by both states. I am not surprised the UK won't recognise Assange as a diplomat as this is just a way to avoid UK legal process. That's not what diplomatic status should ever be allowed to do.

Assange needs to sort himself out and get this offence sorted, then he's a free agent. The Magistrates will probably let him off with nothing more than a warning not to do it again.

So why take up court time on a pointless formality ?
They knew where he was so it's not like he skipped bail to disappear , he skipped bail to avoid deportation for a crime he didn't commit and that is no longer being pursued.

Because it is the job of the court to make the determination and not public opinion. Also the same holds true for the Swedish legal system. You dont get to decide he didnt commit a crime.
