A cruiseship with 480 passengers and 296 crew is in serious trouble the Mediterranean. Heavy sea smashed the windows on the bridge and knocked out the electronics. The ship is taking in water and was adrift for about 4 hours. "The Voyager" eventually managed to get 2 of its 4 engines started and is expected to arrive Cagliari in Sardinia tomorrow morning.

A rescue operation has been carried out in the Mediterranean after a cruise liner issued distress signals off the coast of Minorca.

The ship was hit by ferocious waves which smashed windows on the bridge as the ship was sailing from Tunis to Barcelona.

The spokesman said water poured in, knocking out electric power, stopping the engine and leaving the ship adrift with no communications.

The spokesman said most of the passengers on board are Spanish. Minor injuries are reported among the passengers and crew.

Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

Loosing engine power in a storm means trouble. French coastguard say there is no risk that the ship might sink, I hope they are right. The Voyager is now being escorted by the liquid gas tanker Gimi.

The wave smashed through the windows of the bridge and damaged electronics, causing a power cut.

A distress call from the ship was sent saying it was taking on water and was in "terrible condition.

BBC

"I woke up and the storm had encircled the liner - it was terrifying, with waves as big as houses smashing into the side of the boat. Nature at its most devilish.

One again Nature reminds us that we're not as powerful, or dangerous, as we like to think we are.

How high is the bridge? 3, 4 stories above the waterline? At that leve enough water mass to shatter the thick windows, and deluge electronics?

Just a friendly reminder of what *real* power is.

The boat has restored power to one engine, and they are heading back to port under French military escort. That's the latest, now here's Val with the weather.

You might want to add another 14 or 14 stories; The Royal Caribbean Voyager of the Seas is one of the largest cruise ships afloat.

You have roughly five decks above the water line with several decks above the hull.

It is THE largest cruise ship. Voyager of the Seas has six engines, not four and she is owned by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. Made in Finland by a Norwegian company. This could never happen to that ship. You got the wrong ship, shots.

This is the ship:

"15 GRAND VOYAGER Olympia Voyager 2000 25,000 420 498 Horizon Navigation Iberojet Spain "

You are calling it the Olympia Voyager the Orignal author called it the Voyager. All news stories are calling it the voyager so it is possible we both have the wrong ship. I was referring to the Voyage of the Seas. According to them it is the largest ship, however the ship in question only has approx 750 on aboard where as the one I am talking about would have upwords of 3,000 on board, big differance in size.

Now that the Voyager is being safely escorted under the careful watch of ATSNN...

Department of Factual Correction report

Voyage Of The Seas is a dwarf.

The Queen Mary 2 is the largest cruise ship on the planet, and well publicized as such...

The QM2, which celebrated its first birthday during January in the Eastern Caribbean, is gargantuan: at 1,132 feet long and 135 feet wide, the ship is a 151,400-ton gorilla wherever it lays anchor. On board are a planetarium, a 20,000-square-foot Canyon Ranch spa, an English pub and a ballroom -- but to find them you have to wend through miles of corridors with more dead ends than an incomplete subdivision.

Google away.

Heheh, I forgot about the QM2. Apparently they "forgot" to update that homepage too...

Still, I believe the "Grand Voyager" (previously known as "Olympia Voyager") is the ship in this story. The media is confused and just call her "The Voyager"...

Yes, it was the "Grand Voyager"...

From: au.news.yahoo.com: Cruise Passengers with Broken Bones Come Ashore

Nearly 500 passengers including eight with broken bones disembarked from the "Grand Voyager" cruise ship in Sardinia Tuesday a day after it was battered by a storm in the Mediterranean Sea.

"It was like being on a rollercoaster"

The Voyager lost communications and most of its power on Monday as it was pummeled by force 11 gales and waves up to 15 meters (45 feet) high

What is going on? Another big cruiseship (The Norwegian Dawn) smashed up by a 70-feet freakwave off Florida.

DanG/Climatepatrol: FREAK WAVE ROCKS CRUISE

A "freak wave" more than 70 feet high slammed a luxury cruise ship
steaming for New York yesterday, flooding cabins, injuring passengers and
forcing the liner to stop for emergency repairs.

The Norwegian Dawn, an opulent ocean liner almost 1,000 feet long, limped
into Charleston, S.C., yesterday afternoon after it hit vicious seas in an
overnight storm off Florida - then was creamed by the rogue wave after
dawn.
