Horst Mahler was joint founder of the 'socialist lawyers collective', the legal arm of the Red Army Faction. In 1970 he fled to Jordan with Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhof, Gudrun Ensslin and others, where they trained as armed guerrilla fighters with the Palestinians. Upon his return to Germany, he was arrested and convicetd to 12 years in prison. He gained re-admission as a lawyer in 1978 with the help of his old colleague, Gerhard Schroeder, who acted as Mahler's legal counsel
