NEWS: More Colleges Requiring Health Insurance

many public universities are adding yet another requirement for admission: Health Insurance. Faced with runaway costs some public schools are placing the burden on the students to take care of thier health needs. Experts estimate that anywhere from 10 to 30 percent of all students do not have health insurance.



I'm not surprised and actually as a taxpayer I feel it is a good move. The schools should be using thier money for educational purposes not providing free health care. Alternative systems may be needed to make up the gap or allow the use of student loans to make up the difference.

Why require health insurance? It's just not realistic for some people.

How about bringing down health care costs, instead?

I fractured my shoulder blade last year.

It cost over $1000 for 3 Xrays, a sling, and about two minutes with a doctor.

The next day I had to see an orthopedic specialist.

It cost another $330 for him to feel around my shoulder, look at my file, and tell me, "If you can't raise your arm this high in three weeks, come back again."

No one should have to pay that much for so little.

Not even insurance companies.

This is one additional cost that starts pricing people out of the education market. Many colleges that don't have associated hospitals are also requiring health insurance. For many people this simply prevents them from getting a degree/education.

This has a definite downside. I got hit with this back a couple of years ago. It added several hundred dollars per semester. Sort of counter productive if it prevents a potential student from getting a degree and thereby a better job that provides health care.

Catch 22
You can't afford health care so you can't get an education so you can afford health care.

Yeah man, these medics are worse than freakin lawyers - money grabbing scum many of them... man you should see what they charge here in Brasil - when my wife was pregnant the damn gyno was over $300 dollars for 30 mins... service sucked as well, everytime we went there we had to wait around an hour to see him (an our after the time of our appointment). They always overbook, thats why you always wait.

Before I attended the Borough of Manhattan Community College in the late 90's, I needed a physical before I enrolled. I never understood why. Later, I transfered to Hunter college. I didn't need a physical then, maybe because I was already in the City University of New York system.

I have a suspicion that the government is keeping Americans poor and uneducated (just look at the current administration's "successes" with it's economic and educational policies) so that they will force America's youth into desperation, and join the military in order to receive the basic entitlements that their parents enjoyed.

actually, I think they want a bunch of poor desparate people depending on the government for their basic needs, the more the marrier, so that there will be plenty of people that they can force to take those 50 cent/hr jobs after China and the rest decide they just don't want to deal with us anymore.....
