If Trump had any brains we would be spending money on preventing a dirty bomb from going off in Port Elizabeth or Port Long Beach. We should be following European protocols for examining all shipping containers at ports of origin. But this has been shot down by the powers that be because the implementing the protocols cost too much.

This is a repeat of the Gore commission report about following the same security protocols as Et Al on airplanes before 9/11. One of the recommendations was to put locks on cockpit doors. But the airlines said it would cost too much to implement the improved security. So history repeats itself again.

There is no way to examine every container that comes in to US ports. This isn't the UK OR FRANCE US ports do 10 times the volume. And little can be done to prevent a dirty bomb other then not give them access to nuclear waste. When a bomb goes off it will be a cleanup operation..

would be an expensive undertaking.

It takes the money our purses provide regardless?
It's pretty irresponsible if ya' ponderin'.

I hope they actually go as far as thinking and hardening against a solar mass ejection that hits earth head on....

you clearly have no idea how powerful such a thing can be, we would be so lucky as to only receive one weak enough we could protect against it,

a severe ejection that hits earth could be so powerful as to boil the oceans, there would be no surviving without an underground bunker you could live out your life in..

there is of course variety to CME intensity and certainly what hits us could be lower in power to be survivable and resemble an average emp,

but odds are if what hits us is strong enough to act as an EMP it would most likely be to strong to protect against.

the "across the bow" CME that happened in the 90s is a perfect example, if that one had hit us head on we would all be dead.

As a 22+ year USAF Vet...Obama DID more than ignore this threat. He killed many defense programs that protected against this threat. Namely the Airborne Laser Program. It became operational and he shut it down.

As an anti-missile defense, it was extremely short range, costly, and would be vulnerable to NK attack and on a large aircraft which would have to be maintained on station perpetually.

However, the potentially more effective THAAD was deployed and encouraged for the regional neighbors where it may be effective against IRBMs.

In an environment of finite money, spending on programs with engineering success and potential vs failure is a smart, not dumb, idea.

Ha ha, what's the physics of that?

From our Sun, certainly not. A supernova from a nearby star, maybe, but there aren't any of the right stellar stage nearby.

there would be no surviving without an underground bunker you could live out your life in..

And so protecting against EMP in powerlines wouldn't really matter, would it?

Unless you're looking for radioactive materials, in which case you can detect it from quite a distance. Radioactivity is the easiest danger to detect, as single atom emissions can be detected at a distance at levels far less than than a health hazard.

There's extensive work on remote detection and characterization of radiologicals for arms control treaties and industrial purposes.

A radiological dispersal device is the easiest thing to intercept and the most difficult for a terrorist to deploy successfully. All you need to know is to look at the track record: thousands of successful bombings, shootings, and a few dozen vehicular assaults. No significant nuclear or biological attacks.

Terrorist are also empirical engineers---a truck with explosives is very effective and hard to detect. Putting radiation on it is attaching a bright "ARREST ME NOW" emblem.

Look up the Carrington Event... We as a species are still here... Now... Our magnetic field which protects us from such an event is weakening and thus our protection .... it all depends on the size of the "X" flare/CME and how much our/Earth's magnetic field continues to weaken... which is just about 15% since the 1800s. There are more things to consider than just a Carrington type event.. youtu.be... which none of us have any control over...

One of the largest X-flares recorded was an X23+ on 4/11/2003..If Earth took a direct hit by one of those it would get more than interesting but the oceans would not boil away...youtu.be...

So you are admitting Obama and the Clintons don't have any brains...They have 16 years of doing nothing about it...Trump's been there a year and we don't know what he's doing about it...

well most of the 300 million plus people in America aren`t in the military but they would like to survive too, especially the ones who are paying the taxes to ensure that the military and the government are well funded.

any government that thinks it would be too expensive to ensure the survival of it`s citizens, is a government that isn`t serving the best interest of it citizens and has no business representing the interests of it citizens.

you know what is too expensive? providing financial support to 50% of the population who pay no taxes, providing food and other government handouts to the 50% of the population who can`t or won`t take care of themselves, providing medical care and food to people who aren`t even citizens and are here illegally. all of those things plus more are too expensive, providing for the safety and well being of the citizens who pay the bills and make this country possible is NOT too expensive.
an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, no matter how many dead beats have to have their free food and other free stuff reduced or cut off in order to provide that ounce of prevention.

So you think the US gov. should neglect 150 million citizens today so they can build the infrastructure to care for them in underground bunkers in the event that something might happen? Seems a little bass ackwards.

Government drove out industry .
Then services moved to India .
Now even Walmart and other box stores are lousing out to amazon .
Fast food joints are switching to automation faster then you can say Ill take fires with that .
But least we forget It is 150 million lazy people how refuse to work . Work ?
Got news for you the lower educated have always done farm work factory work construction work .
they take off your garbage and clean up your poo .?
But with no jobs just were are these lazy people working ?
Just how many B kings a taco bells does Detroit have any way ?
Because it sure does not have industry jobs .
The few that still have ( like the poster who brought up the 150 million ) are scared out of there mind because they KNOW soon they will be one of that 175 million 200 million 300 million as even the last transport truck in now Driven by a computer .

What is really funny is every one really believes The Trump effect is real and long term .

Yeah i remember when all the emp hoopla was on the news cycles, and they basically just told us we are screwed. I'm glad somebody is finally going to take steps to do something about it.

Am I the only one here who noticed that Trump talking about doing something is not a promise kept?

Geez, we're setting the bar real low now.

The EMP thing is real enough. A big pulse from the sun fried electrical equipment around the world in the 1850s. It would be good if Trump could do something about it but, let's face it, his track record of actually doing things is pretty weak.

Yeah, causing problems in power lines is many orders of magnitude lower energy flux than "boil the oceans".

no you look it up, "the Carrington flare was a >X10"
www.swsc-journal.org...

with the way the classification system is, if an X28 as has been measured missed us, were to happen again and not miss us, it would be ALOT worse then the carrington X10, and as the X10 was enough to melt the wires off the poles which nowadays would burn up every home with it... an X28 would probly kill us quicker then the wood could begin to burn

I'll save the applause until someone actually DOES something vs. saying it.

Trump said a lot to get elected, and has pulled a 180 on many of them. And this is from a guy who voted for him (well, couldn't stand the corruption of the OTHER choice, so what's THAT say?)
