A security screener at Newark International Airport in New Jersey failed to notice a butcher knife carried through the airport security checkpoint in a passenger's purse. The passenger later discovered that she had the knife while waiting to board a plane and alerted airport security. The woman had put the knife in her purse to carry with her on a blind date as a safety precaution. The screener has been reassigned and the woman was not charged.

NEWARK, N.J. -- A Newark Liberty International Airport security screener is being reassigned after officials said she failed to spot a butcher knife in a passenger's pocketbook.

A passenger waiting to board a flight on Saturday morning discovered she had forgotten to remove the knife, but only after she had cleared security and was waiting to board a flight.

The woman, Katrina Bell, 27, and her sister, Tikisha Bell Gowens, 30, both of Greensboro, N.C., were not charged. They promptly informed airport personnel, who summoned police and federal security officials.

This incident does little to reassure me that the new government run airport security put in place after the 9/11 terrorist attacks are making air travel safer. If it can be that easy to accidentally take something like a butcher knife through security, it must be even easier to bring something that his better concealed through surreptitiously.

You can't blame the security measures in a case such as this. The measures may have been well designed and implemented, but this is a simple case of human error.

Of course, I realize that saying this does nothing to allay your fears, however.
