Sunday, Rome was among 7 Italian cities that banned using cars and scooters. In an effort to reduce smog emissions under European laws. Under these rules each city is required to keep levels of small particles in the atmosphere below a set level for 330 days out of the year.

ROME (Reuters) - Italians took to the streets on foot and bicycles on Sunday in seven major cities including Rome, as authorities banned cars and even scooters in an effort lower the levels of smog sullying the skyline.
The stepped-up campaign came as many Italian cities fast approached their yearly limits for particulate matter emissions under European Union rules.

Each city is obliged to keep levels of small particles in the atmosphere below a set level for at least 330 days a year. But some of Italy's biggest urban centers, especially in the north, seem destined to miss that target as early as February.

Financial capital Milan has already nearly reached the yearly limit, exceeding the EU levels during 34 days up to Feb. 9, according to a study by Euromobility, published on its Internet site, www.euromobility.org. Other cities, including Turin have already surpassed the limit.

Wow, I was suprised to hear this. I can imagine this happening in the U.S. In fact, I could imagine riots in the street if they tried it. Can you just see L.A. or NY banning car/scooters for even half a day? Not saying it is a bad thing. It could be a big health benifit to the whole world.

There is an interesting tie in with this story that reducing particle emissions could actually accelerate global warming not slow it down.

Global Dimming ,the proven scientific phenomenon where sunlight is deflected by carbon emission particles then masks the true consequences of Global Warming.

Research done soon after 9/11,when almost all flight had been canceled, showed an immediate increase in temperature due to less carbon particle emmissions from aircraft.

Catch 22.

This may be true, but is likely a necessary 'tilt' on the way back to a more natural balance. Also - these 'particles' are bloody unhealthy - and contributing to more disease, in more ways than we know. ...Time to clean up for many reasons.

Well this cities are very ancient and most of their building fragil, the smog has been the cause of many damage of building in that area of the world.

It seems that smog erodes marble and most of the areas in these cities with beautiful monuments are of marble, Greece also has the same problem.

The dirty pollution responsible for global dimming was also responsible for the change in weather patterns in the early 80's which caused massive droughts in Africa.....but at least the west was ok driving its cars ! It is also responsible for whole host of respiratory problems. So the dirty pollution is bad and we have to clean up. However, we also have to fix the opaque pollution (CO2) at the same time. All those models over the years have seriously underestimated the effect of global warming due to the masking effects of global dimming. Ooops. Then again maybe we should behave like the sceptics doing impressions of Nero.
