So...an angle I hadn't thought of and one that is very true. The DOW lost 350 points after Ross falsely reported. Plenty of folks lost plenty of money because of it.

Should media be held accountable for false reporting that has an effect like this?

“People who lost money when the Stock Market went down 350 points based on the False and Dishonest reporting of Brian Ross of @ABC News (he has been suspended), should consider hiring a lawyer and suing ABC for the damages this bad reporting has caused - many millions of dollars!” Trump tweeted.

Can the market loss be blamed on the report? Is there any way to tie it in? If it can be, should ABC be forced to pay?

I'd say if they can tie the loss directly to the false report then ABC should pay every dime.

a reply to: Vasa Croe Well I disagree. FOX has done the same thing in regards to false reports. Maybe not resulting in loss of money in the markets but I am sure I could find evidence of that but I am mobile. If this media accountability was a thing all major MSM would cease to exist.

The media’s incessant, negative narrative in 2006-2007 saw our economy plummet and ushered in an era of socialism helmed by a friggin community organizer...

Holding the media responsible is impossible...

But it’s nice to have a republican finally fight back against the media bias...

They are sycophants bent on imposing their brand of social justice...which has time and again proved nothing more than a breeding ground for despots and tyrants..

Media draws in people who are incapable of anything other than reporting on others...this is the inherent flaw of a free press...
Which ironically ends in the press becoming an extension of a despotic regime bent on silencing all who would question their socialist dreams of robbing the rich..

a reply to: Vasa Croe And no the market crash can be blamed on dumb people believing everything they hear without doing the proper research. What you are implying is the old the gun kills not the person.

If you have money in a 401k what legal recourse do you have to sue if this happens? None! This isn't just a matter of fake news causing a financial issue, but also an issue of those who control the money flow.
The MSM has gone full on propaganda mode for entities we have yet to uncover. Look at the NORK's. At least they know who is behind the lies they get fed! The so called Western Societies of the Free World? Not so much......

Holy cow! I actually agree with you on this matter.

The msm is not responsible due to knee jerk reactions of traders. Those traders are at fault for not using due diligence. They basically made the same mistake as ABC...wanting to be 'first' and not verifying before acting.

That's like asking if Russia fake news can be proven to have influenced the outcome of the election. "Can HIllary's loss be blamed on Russian fake news?"

D'uh...it's an assumed 'Hell, yes!' and a Special Prosecutor should be appointed, quick-quick, to investigate any criminal collusion to influence the stock market.

AND, let the civil lawsuits commence, too!

So? ?????

Because you can find evidence of Fox news false reporting... Than it's ok for media outlets to do so even when it is found to be harmful beoned partisan politics?

What a strange argument.

a reply to: DanDanDat My very reasonable post was to try and point out that as a individual you should do your own research before just believing what you hear. Imo your post is very strange.

The media should be accountable and responsible for what it reports.

Perhaps if we held the media to ANY form of accountability, the media might start providing facts.

On the other hand, free expression.

Do we punish media for saying something that isn't true? We, as members, publish information all the time that is unsubstantiated and often proven false.

Should we be held accountable as well?

Yep.

As much as I would love to see more grief for the msm, this would set a very dangerous precedent.

ABC should lose credibility, but they should not be held legally accountable for how players in the market decide to react.

If you lost money, just stop watching ABC or any of the networks that spread their lies.

Yep...dollar cost averaging through systematic sustained regular investments is always the way to go, at least for us average Joes/Janes...

a reply to: DBCowboy That is how I look at it. If a news agency knowingly or unknowingly publishes a story that is false then gets fined or punished by some other means by the fed is just another step in getting rid of freeesom of expression/speech.

We are. People sue ordinary people, all the time, for defamation/libel/slander that causes harm to their reputation and/or business.
