Davis played college football for Syracuse University and was the first pick in the 1962 NFL Draft. Selected by the Washington Redskins of the National Football League (NFL) in December 1961, he was then almost immediately traded to the Cleveland Browns and issued number 45.
Davis was diagnosed with leukemia in the summer of 1962,[4][5] and died less than a year later at age 23, without ever playing in a professional game.[3]
a French psychiatrist, philosopher, revolutionary, and writer whose works are influential in the fields of post-colonial studies, critical theory, and Marxism.[1] As an intellectual, Fanon was a political radical, Pan-Africanist, and Marxist humanist concerned with the psychopathology of colonization,[2] and the human, social, and cultural consequences of decolonization.[3][4][5]
In the course of his work as a physician and psychiatrist, Fanon supported the Algerian War of Independence from France, and was a member of the Algerian National Liberation Front. For more than five decades, the life and works of Frantz Fanon have inspired national liberation movements and other radical political organizations in Palestine, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and the United States.
In 1961, the CIA arranged a trip to the U.S. for further leukemia treatment at a National Institutes of Health facility.[18] Fanon died in Bethesda, Maryland, on 6 December 1961, under the name of "Ibrahim Fanon"
(died of a stroke due to an undiagnosed form of aggressive cancer, just weeks after he agreed to testify before Congress about the JFK assassination)

Bill Russell. Hank Aaron. Jim Brown. Muhammed Ali, who was sort of mildly involved in civil rights issues.
Just a few of the big name black athletes in the same era that were also making waves and didn't die in the process.
Interesting theory though.

Touching to see that Art Modell really cared about Ernie and tried to help him. That redeems him (Modell) in my eyes as most of Ohio despised him when he moved the Browns to Baltimore. In hindsight, not sure why we ever brought them back.
Very intriguing story OP. At this point in time, it wouldn't surprise me if the see eye ayyy invented cancer in the first place

Between 50 and 70 billion cells die each day due to apoptosis in the average human adult.

I thought it was strange that Walter Payton contracted liver cancer out of the blue.
O.J. Simpson must have "fit in" with whatever the establishment wanted. He's still alive.
What about Jim Brown?
Cirrhosis due to hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or alcohol, aflatoxin, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, liver flukes

I didn't know about Payton having liver cancer. Hepatitis and alcoholism are probably the most likely causes though, as the list of the main known causes are (for liver cancers) :
Cirrhosis due to hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or alcohol, aflatoxin, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, liver flukes

After all these years, the CIA should have a way to deliver quick/terminal cancer to Kim Jong, of North Korea.
