Why the UN is investigating extreme poverty … in America, the world's richest nation

At the heart of Philip Alston’s special mission will be one question: can Americans enjoy fundamental human rights if they’re unable to meet basic living standards?

The United Nations monitor on extreme poverty and human rights has embarked on a coast-to-coast tour of the US to hold the world’s richest nation – and its president – to account for the hardships endured by America’s most vulnerable citizens. The tour, which kicked off on Friday morning, will make stops in four states as well as Washington DC and the US territory of Puerto Rico. It will focus on several of the social and economic barriers that render the American dream merely a pipe dream to millions – from homelessness in California to racial discrimination in the Deep South, cumulative neglect in Puerto Rico and the decline of industrial jobs in West Virginia.

With 41 million Americans officially in poverty according to the US Census Bureau (other estimates put that figure much higher)

So out of 321 million there are 41 million in poverty.

Are you seeing the wealth gap now? It is not a gap, it is a gulf, it is the #ing Grand Canyon of wealth inequality.

So the 41 million must be Moloch's sacrifice then, eh?

Meanwhile Trumpster is doing this:

Trump says he will give Americans 'tremendous tax cut for Christmas' despite unclear path House Republicans have revealed the most sweeping rewrite of the US tax code in decades

www.bbc.co.uk...

Tax bill: Trump victory as Senate backs tax overhaul

The plan sees a sharp cut in CORPORATION (my capitals) tax, but a Senate committee finding has warned it would add $1tn (£742bn) to the budget deficit.

Is that clear enough for you?

Is Trump giving a Chriggy prezzy to the 41 million poor? It is CORPORATION TAX he is cutting, while putting up the national debt so that the creditors can extract even more interest and profit from the 41 million (and everyone else, too, but the 41 million will suffer most for this).

All the U.N will do is LOOK and SEE. They never do anything about anything. They are lame. Ohhh yes, they do do something; they abuse those in their care:

Why do some UN peacekeepers rape?

They will tell you the old yarn; wealth trickles down. Yes, it trickles down like a stalactite that takes thousands of years and pierces like a spike as a cent is tossed casually and arrogantly into the beggars' bowls. I'm a stalagMIGHT I grow from the bottom on the anger they make me feel. I can pierce, too and I will do my darnedest to try.

Remember, it is newspaper articles I am quoting from. I am saying nothing in terms of facts that they are not saying.

Think HARD about this.

If trump had his way, nobody would have welfare, even those who truly need it. He would cut all aid to the poorest, most needy people in the U.S. I am talking about the legit who need, and deserve help. Those include wounded vets, who happen to be on food stamps to subsides their income, so they can pay rent among others who deserve help.

I live in So Cali, the amount of homeless, mentally ill people I see living on the streets is staggering.

From direct experience:

No, humans have no rights when they're too poor to live indoors. They have the right to be woken up and chased off their cardboard bed in the middle of the night. They ave the right to be cited for trespassing, their pockets groped, their body bruised, their freedom confiscated, all_night_long.

But who gives a rats ass, they're poor right? Damn leeches, whats the matter with you? Get a haircut, get a job.

Methamphetamine, and some of that is made from bug spray.

Besides, its Obamas fault. Trump hasnt done anything yet. We are coming off the 8 years of socialist rule, and now the socialist bankers want to blame trump? LOL

but wouldnt that mean you are growing upwards due to accumulating the pennies they throw down, that you gather and hold their trickle down wealth and refuse to allow the wealth to spread around you. instead using it to prop yourself up away from the base that holds you...

How is it Obama's fault? The ever increasing wealth gap exists in its current form thanks to economic policies dating back to Reagan.

Trickle down economics causes middle class income to stagnate and three poverty level to increase. The only ones that actually see an increase in their wealth are the wealthy.

Its the fault of idiots who supported the ideas of flooding the country with cheap labour and ramping up the welfare state. It's really not a surprise that the standard of living would fall for many whilst a few got very very rich. That's globalism and progressivism for you.

It's the fault of the Christian, Captialist evil scum that run America. They are pure evil and will now have free reign to finish enslaving or killing everyone that isn't one of them.

Probably not. According to them, the poor are to blame for everything.

I agree. and, the real plan is to beef up the military and then reek bloody havoc in the middle east to "steal their oil", imo.

first get them riled up on muslim hate, which really means arab/Persian looking hate.. post videos, don't matter if they're real or not, just get em good and riled up/

use globalist as a bad nasty word constantly cuz what they're going to do is gonna be way worse in every way. - make America stupid again! and, kill those Muslims while you're at it... sickening. but, were gonna get their oil so everybody wins!

Pehaps if we got rid of the welfare abusers there would be more for those that “truly” need help with food and housing?

Not $60k cars, $2k televisions, $1k cell phone...but actual food and housing...and by food, I don’t mean McDonalds 3 meals a day, everyday...

OK.

Again.

The poverty measure was changed under the Obama administration. Instead of being a hardline cutoff ... say $25,000/year (or whatever they set it at), the Obama Admin decided to make it a percentage measure instead of the overall income. So no matter what we are all earning, there will *always* be a certain percentage of the US population living in poverty.

So even if the lower income levels were living in relative comfort, the lowest percentage would still be defined as living in poverty under those rules. For that reason, you cannot simply take the percentage of US citizens living in poverty as reported and equate them to African level mud hut (Central American shanty town for that matter); the picture is more complicated.

There certainly are Americans living in that type of grinding poverty, but not 41% of the population.

Well..maybe at one time the US was the richest nation on the planet...but we aren't now, that's for sure.

source

But I think it's a decent move to investigate why there is a wealth gap, and maybe see if there are any underlying causes... I mean I can think of a few...laziness, illness, lack of industry, lack of motivation just to name a few off the top of my head.
