At least 200 people have been killed after suspected militants set off a bomb and opened fire at a mosque in Egypt's restive northern Sinai province.

The attack on Friday targeted supporters of the security forces attending prayers there, two eyewitnesses and a security source said.

Eyewitnesses at Al Rawdah mosque in Bir al-Abed, near Arish city, told local media ambulances rushed to take the wounded to nearby hospitals.

- Suspected militants set off a bomb and opened fire at a mosque in northern Sinai province
- At least 200 people dead, health ministry spokesperson says
- No claim of responsibility, but Egyptian military has been fighting Isis insurgency in Sinai for three years

The attack is the largest single targeting of Egyptian civilians and the first on a large mosque congregation since the Isis affiliate began its campaign of violence against the state following the military's 2013 overthrow of an elected but divisive Islamist president.

Update: 200 deads and 125 wounded.

Horrible vile act. Sinai seems to be hard to rid of terrorist scum. You'd think it be easier there with the less dense population. Must have quite the support network there.

And who do you think provides the support for terrorist? Some country provides the guns and bombs. Who?

Tragic as this is it seems to be a continuation of the centuries old Sunni/Shia conflict which appears to be escalating horribly.

Why would an ISIS affiliate attack a mosque?

How does that help their cause? Makes no sense, then again acts of evil and atrocities are often senseless.

The civil war within Islam is nothing new, but the violence is escalating. This is horrific.

but it is understandable.....

the Muslim Brotherhood backed candidate got into office... in a matter of weeks the population of Egypt was up in arms to toss the radical-fundamentalist out... a more moderate leader replaced the puppet leader, moderate meaning not a fundamentalist Sharia Law devotee & puppet leader

so... I think the MB parlays with a radical group within IS/ISIS to attack the Security forces while in Prayer...(I wonder if their Egypt Mosques are Gun-Free Zones like here in the USA)...

it was a political attack as much as a radical Salafis/Pro Sharia Law attack that promotes a very strict obligation to Islam that is being pressed here...

the radicals want another Sunni-led-radical-jihadi form of Islamic State & not a '21st century/ worldly kind of Egypt.
& They will cloud the intent, with using IS/ISIS groups or sects as Proxies to Attack the 'neutral ground' Mosques at will, especially the Mosques near Security Forces living-working sites

seems everyone has their own enemy...a Deep State, Shadow Government, a Hidden Hand which seeks to overthrow the present-in-power Elites

Are you serious? That's what they do. Sunni Muslims kill Shia Muslims who kill the other lot etc... It's the cycle of life and death in those nations plagued by the constant brutality of inter-denominational hatred over the last thousand years. Who do you think plants bombs in market places and schools? Santa?

They always have. ISIS hates the Shia, the Kurds, all of them Muslims, and versions and offshoots of Islam such as Yazidis, Sufis, Alawites, etc.

The Egyptian military kicked off a hunt for the attackers of a Sufi mosque in the northern Sinai, a military source said, combing the area of Friday's assault that killed at least 235 people -- thought to be the deadliest terror attack on the country's soil. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi vowed to respond to the attack on al Rawdah mosque with "brute force." Some 109 others were injured, Egyptian state media reported. No one has claimed responsibility, but the strike bears the hallmarks of an attack by ISIS. The mosque is known as the birthplace of an important Sufi cleric. Sufism is a mystical branch of Islam that some ultra-orthodox Muslims consider heretical.
so seems egypt is out for blood and is looking for the animals that did this . bastards lit up the ambulances evacuating the wounded ,hopefully they can track them down quickly before they get out of the Sinai region as its not like the terrorists can go flee into Israel so that should cut off some avenues of escape .

www.nbcnews.com...

Police sources told the Associated Press that men in four off-road vehicles opened fire on worshippers in the al-Rawdah mosque in the town of Al Rawdah. NBC News could not immediately independently verify that account. Two eyewitnesses and a security source told Reuters that the suspected militants targeted supporters of the security forces attending prayers. Citing official sources, the state-run MENA news agency reported that the mosque is largely attended by Sufi Muslims — a form of Islam considered heretical by some conservatives and extremists like the Islamic State group.
seems leading theory may be isis, also from link above it seems that the coptic christians have been getting attacked as well but does not seem to be making the news

There has been a wave of attacks on the country's Coptic Christian minority, but strikes on mosques are rare and Friday's onslaught shocked many throughout Egypt.

Shiites vs Sunnis I wonder? God, what a brutal and merciless attack... praying for all those affected.

May the people responsible be forever haunted for this. Evil, disgusting human beings to do something like this...

It was a Sufi Mosque..

What happened?

During the Friday prayers at a Sufi mosque in Bir al-Abed, North Sinai, four 4WD vehicles drove up to the mosque. Reports said the attackers planted explosives and then opened fire on worshippers.

The attackers next targeted fleeing worshipers with gunfire.

...which fundamentalists primarily the Wahhabis (read Saudis) dislike and have a long history of persecuting. In fact they 'stole' the 'holy' cities from the care of the mystical Sufis.

No - it's purely Sunni infighting.

These simplistic misunderstandings are not helpful to anyone. Learning something about the subtitles of the actual realities;

From: www.newstatesman.com...

Yet although scripture was so central to Ibn Abd al-Wahhab’s ideology, by insisting that his version of Islam alone had validity, he had distorted the Quranic message. The Quran firmly stated that “There must be no coercion in matters of faith” (2:256), ruled that Muslims must believe in the revelations of all the great prophets (3:84) and that religious pluralism was God’s will (5:48).

Muslims had, therefore, been traditionally wary of takfir, the practice of declaring a fellow Muslim to be an unbeliever (kafir).

Hitherto Sufism, which had developed an outstanding appreciation of other faith traditions, had been the most popular form of Islam and had played an important role in both social and religious life.

“Do not praise your own faith so exclusively that you disbelieve all the rest,” urged the great mystic Ibn al-Arabi (d.1240). “God the omniscient and omnipresent cannot be confined to any one creed.”

It was common for a Sufi to claim that he was a neither a Jew nor a Christian, nor even a Muslim, because once you glimpsed the divine, you left these man-made distinctions behind.

May justice be served to the guilty.

Justice doesn't have to be served at all, but rather awareness, on a global scale, if everyone had 100% awareness we'd live in a very peaceful and compassion place.

Looks like the British, Italians and French don't like Egypt's support for serious peace plans for Syria. Otherwise there's no reason for this "terrorist attack".
