Greetings. I used the ATS search engine, but was unable to locate any post regarding this photograph. Over the years we've seen many strange Mars pictures that have been taken by Curiosity...fossils, statues, buildings, UFO's, flowing water, plants and trees. 99% of these objects turned out to be rocks, pareidolia or a camera glitch. Well, here's yet another weird picture, that shows what looks to be a plant or tree of some kind. It seems to be in an odd place for a plant, or tree. I also found a YouTube clip, that was posted on November 6, that is about this particular picture. This picture was taken from the Nasa.gov website and was taken by Curiosity on September 4, 2016. I posted the link under the YouTube clip.

HERE'S THE LINK: mars.jpl.nasa.gov...

Looks more like a cross used as a grave marker.

I have a theory that the members of the "27 club" actually went to Mars, so it's likely one of theirs.

optical illusion, its an striation in the background rock

For me, it looks like a crevice in the rock or sand where liquid CO2 has flowed downwards and made a little evaporation pond. It does look like a cross at low resolution.

Magic Martian Mushroom??

It could be a 3D object from the ground... but it also could be, as others have pointed out, an illusion with crack between rocks behind. The shading looks similar.

Looks pretty cool even if just another rock!

Cool find!

I was thinking along the same lines.
However the cliff face behind the tree...looking...Thing...
Has a shadow.
That shadow goes behind the... what ever it is.
Then I thought maybe an artifact from the photo stitching. But you would be able to see the seams else where in the image.

What the hell IS that? Awesome photo!

Has there been any official comment on this?

Either it's an optical illusion, or it's real. Most times I can make myself snap out of the illusion and see what it really is, but for the life of me I can't see how it's connected to any rocks. There's sand in between it and the rocks.

here it is blown up as large as i can get the site to take.

at first i was gonna day it's a crack in the rock like the rest of them but it doesn't look like rock at the base, more like sand with some stones in it.

How do you explain that it goes below the rock and into the sand?... Nice try though

OK, lets have some fun. I'll be the devil's advocate. I blew up the picture some more and pointed at a few odd looking things. Some say it's an optical illusion or crevice.

1) What's this odd looking thing...shadow? rock?
2) I'm seeing a "stalk" of some kind with highlights and shadows. Why would a crevice in a rock continue in the sand?
3) What is this thing? Looks like something coming out from the "stalk."
4) Once again, this appears like some sort of branch sticking out of the main stalk.
5) Notice this circular ring on this "stalk?" Why would this appear here if it is a crevice?

Ball is in your court now.

Awesome....I did the same and pointed some things out. Man, it doesn't look like a crevice with this blow up!

Not a tree, or any other upright object, it appears.

Or... maybe trees on Mars have a field around them that bends light.
