WTF is an ally to the black people? Why can't I just be a nice person and respect everyone? Why do I need to pick allies?

You don't need to pick anything. This is what you are being told by race baiting losers who profit off of hatred. I live in the most multi ethnic city in the world. I've never seen anything as stupid as this op-ed piece and it offends me to see people defending it. Rational people with basic reading comprehension skills will ignore this race baiter and his supporters and move on with their lives. Don't stress it.

Because you share the same skin color as someone that owned slaves. It doesn't matter who you are, just your skin color. Sounds familiar doesn't it.

That is precisely what the race baiting author of this op-ed piece stated.

Luckily those of us who are better than that will ignore him and continue to live life.

Typical racist scum (the person who wrote the article).

I tend to ignore those hysterical hyperbolic attention seekers.

Sadly, people like the author of that article have normalized racism. When I hear someone labeled a racist, the first thing that comes to mind is "well, looks like another victim of the Clinton/Obama era smear machine"

Just taking OP's title at face value, the answer is "No" because your attitude is apparent and will be picked up by the children. (I understand the OPs stance is far different from the title, but from JUST the title: No.

But the very first paragraph sets the tone.

Ah. So if you set the tone first, anything thereafter can be excused?

Careful. You might pull something serious reaching for that logic.

Sadly it is not some hole in the wall blog or even a local newspaper rag...

It is the damned New York Times publishing this kind of crap.

CNN has given a daily platform to several racists there too.

For African-Americans, race has become a proxy not just for politics but also for decency. White faces are swept together, ominous anxiety behind every chance encounter at the airport or smiling white cashier. If they are not clearly allies, they will seem unsafe to me.

Don't you just love racial profiling ?

Lets give it up for 'social justice' !

I love when people say my great great grandfather owned slaves so I benefited. Sorry, false. My family immigrated long after slavery ended

So what are you personally doing on a daily basis to combat what you just said? What actions have and are you taking?

If they are not clearly allies...

I guess that means because I'm a middle aged, white guy, apparently a trifecta worthy of suspicion by today's standards, I now need to hang around my neck a social justice resume for inspection by any who might demand it?

Who are you to ask such a question?

ETA: As I have written this elsewhere, I'll tell you what I do on a 'daily' basis....

I live my life being me, every day, a product of the following:

I was born on the left coast, live on the east coat and have spent half my life living in several European countries. I speak more than one language.

I'm married to a liberal, tree-hugging, granola eating, organic loving, passionate environmentalist, my best friend is a self proclaimed socialist (closer to communist), I have a European, catholic mother, I have a Jewish father, I have a Muslim sister-in-law, I have an uncle who is a hasidic rabii, and I had another uncle who was the leader of the Communist party of a large European city.

This middle aged white guy patiently awaits your judgement as to whether I know anything about religious, ethnic or racial diversity, and how I may or may not support it.

I don't get it? Is being concerned for children's safety bad?

When you teach them they can not be friends with certain people based on the color of their skin, yes.

I don't see them saying that. Also I noticed that nobody mentioned that the rightists were racist towards Obama.

Yeah we were so racist that we elected him as our leader TWICE.

Doesn't change the fact that we had racist opinions and views towards Obama and his family.

You were better off with how you left the discussion. Now you're back for more?

Judging someone based upon the color of their skin is wrong! This guy you tried to defend did exactly what is promoting racism in this country.

But go on with your bad self. Sucker for punishment I guess?

Everyone on the right did not hate Obama. Everyone on the left hates Trump there is a big difference.

And that talk stems from the idea that American culture is somehow "white" which is something all white people are taught that it's not. We aren't allowed to claim it. It's not ours. It belongs to everyone, even black people who think there is some conspiracy making it not theirs.

So what are you personally doing on a daily basis to combat what you just said? What actions have and are you taking?

I already told you. My kid is told it's OK to like whoever you like and be friends with whoever you want to be friends with.

Or are you telling me I ought to cut him out of my will in favor of the kids of this aricle's authors in order to rectify past mistakes?

Sorry, but my child is mixed race. He may not strictly look it, but he happens to be a POC himself.
