Sure,i'll fire 4 Pheonixes at you,and even if 3 missed,1 would hit, even when fired from 300km away. F-14s were designed to shoot down slower planes at further ranges, like for example Backfires and Bears before they fired their missles at the carrier groups.

The F-14 Tomcat is a capable fighter, who has a good combat record, much more impressive than the F/A-18 Hornet. It managed to shoot down even a couple of MiG-25, which is a Mach 3+ aircraft, while the F/A-18 was shot down by the MiG-25. Here are the combat records of the two jets.

The F-14 is definitly a failure, the Phoenix was more of a failure than the F-14, it's still a great fighter and even bomber.

The Phoenix only has a 60% chance to hit a long ranges, but that's still pretty decent for a missile of this age...

Not to make double posting, check the combat record that I've posted earlier. The AIM-54 missile was used successfully during the Iran - Irak war. Of the 135 kills of the Tomcat, 61 were achieved with AIM-54 missile, that is
45% of the total. It is normal to take advantage of a long range missile if you have it. Some people claim it is only good to shoot down bombers and missiles. It also achieved kills against fighters and strike aircraft. Here is the list of targets shot down by the Phoenix missile:

unidentified fighter - 4
MiG-21- 4
MiG-23 - 12
MiG-25 - 11
Mirage F1 - 12
Su-22 - 7
MiG-27 - 2
Tu-22 - 5
Xian H-6D - 1
Super Etendard - 1
SA321 Gazelle - 1
C-601 missile - 1

If you ask any F-18 pilot that originally flew Tomcats...And I have ask a few. They will tell you if I went to war tomorrow I would rather be in a TOMCAT any day. Carried more fire power and flew faster. Why do you think Northrop jumped at the chance to by Grumman. There heavy lift technology is superior. The Tomcat could carrier takeoff at 7000 pounds heavier then a F-15 and I don't know how much more then a hornet. 73000 pounds at takeoff is a lot. Failure not a chance.

HORNETS by budget TOMCATS by choice.

A big advantage of the Tomcat was that it was designed to carry a big heavy load and go fast at the same time.
The US navy looked into adapting the F15 for fleet defender use. The F15 would gain 1000 kg in weight to make a direct "port" however if they wanted to add Phoenix missiles the performance would degrade so significantly it would be almost useless.
The F14 also has a very high turning rate just as much as the F16. However its rate of roll is rather low.

also the tomcats ability to engage multiple targets at the same time is something that no other fighter is able to do. I talked to a F-15 pilot recently and he said the f-14 is the plane he does not EVER won't to go air to air against.

Tracking and engaging multiple targets is far from something only the F-14 can do, its been a common requirement of interceptors and fighters for a couple of decades now.

Oh, come off it people, what is this with jealousy here? This isn't the forum for 3 year-olds. The two aircraft I was referring to were never put into mass-production, because their designs were too lousy. And jealous of the Eurofighter? Why would I be jealous of something like that? What is there to even be jealous about? You people make some truly azznine statements sometimes.....

And uhhhh, YES, the F-18 E/F Superhornet is just as large as an F-14. I should've made myself clearer, I did not mean the F-18 C/D was as large as a Tomcat, I meant the Superhornet.

[edit on 12-2-2005 by Broadsword20068]

You have obviously never been very close to these aircraft... The F14 makes the super-hornet look small. The Tomcat had a longer range, was faster, better radar, but was aging and costly to maintain.
Choosing an aircraft is political not logical when chosen for manufacture.

I thought the F-14 was like the F-15... infact I like the look of the F-14 better than the F-15, it's almost as if the F-15 is a stripped down version of the F-14 - instead of the F-22 as another poster said earlier... assuming you are talking about the F-14 Tomcat, it's missiles based of the F-4 Phantom, and they made the F111B which had poor landing capabilities so they made the F-14. Am I right?
