Well now we have the U.S. Justice Dept settling (some) of those cases brought by "Tea Party" type groups who were wrongly stalled by the IRS under Obama for their tax status applications.

AG Sessions said the whole IRS thing was wrong and there's no excuse for this conduct.

Now maybe the JD will "re-open" some criminal investigations as well?

No comment from Lois Lerner at this time.

Trump DOJ settles lawsuits over Tea Party targeting by Obama IRS

The Trump administration, after years of litigation, has settled lawsuits with Tea Party and other conservative groups who say they were unfairly targeted by the IRS under the Obama administration.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced early Thursday that the Justice Department had entered into settlements with Tea Party groups whose tax-exempt status was significantly delayed by the IRS dating back to 2013, “based solely on their viewpoint or ideology.”

The settlements involve payments to the plaintiffs and an apology from the IRS.

The targeting scandal drew heavy attention in 2013 when the IRS admitted it applied extra scrutiny to conservative groups applying for nonprofit status. Lois Lerner, then head of the Exempt Organizations unit responsible, became the public face of the scandal, though other IRS officials were involved as well.

Pretty typical of this administration, settle a case rather than let the course of justice rule.

Or, just write an Executive Order before the courts can decide.

Topic: Trump admins settles a case, rather than letting run its course in the courts.

That's typical of this administration.

Typical of all administrations...or I guess you can just keep waving your teams flag.

====================

On topic, what annoys me about this is the tax payer will foot the bill while the people that caused the problem continue to draw paychecks from the Federal Government.

First of all, Jeff Session, along with many of Trump's cabinet were Tea Party members or allies. The Navajo nation nor Iran were politically linked to Obama's election.

Secondly, the Navajo Nation settlement was done in September of 2014, 5 1/2 years after Obama was elected for the 2nd time. There was no political capitol gained for him or his administration.

Third, from your link:

The U.S. State Department announced the government had agreed to pay Iran $1.7 billion to settle a case related to the sale of military equipment prior to the Iranian revolution, according to a statement issued on Sunday. Iran had set up a $400 million trust fund for such purchases, which was frozen along with diplomatic relations in 1979. In settling the claim, which had been tied up at the Hague Tribunal since 1981, the U.S. is returning the money in the fund along with "a roughly $1.3 billion compromise on the interest,

This settlement returned money that always belonged to Iran, and was heard and settled at a Hague Tribunal back in 1981.

international arbitral tribunal established pursuant to the Algiers Accords of January 19, 1981, an agreement between the United States and Iran mediated by Algeria to resolve the hostage crisis. In exchange for the release of the hostages seized by Iranian students on November 4, 1979, the United States agreed to terminate litigation against Iran in U.S. courts and to release Iranian assets frozen by the Carter Administration.

So, Obama wasn't trying to win political favors among his party's allies. He was fulfilling an old promise.

Also, the Iran settlement happened in 2016, 8 years after Obama took office.

The examples I gave are reflective of Trump's impatience, lack of ability to get Congress and the courts to do what he wants or benefits his biggest supporter, Putin.

This is an obvious "pay to play", quid pro quo, political move that benefits Trump's base. Nothing else!

Nice deflection attempt.

You forgot to tell all of us that the Obama Administration ordered the IRS to do those illegal things.

Not illegal you say?

Well why did Lois Lerner take the 5th several times?

Remember when the IRS commissioner claimed he couldn't hand over Louis Learner's emails because "her hard drive crashed"? Remember how the media yawned? I'm getting really tired of the left/Democrat being blatantly corrupt, but avoiding any consequences from it because they control most of the main stream flow of information.

What deflection? What's to deflect from. There is no comparison between the Iran settlement, and the Navajo Nation settlements, all of them done way late into Obama's administration, and neither of them benefited his base.

On the other hand, Trump does these things, right away, without waiting for the courts, or Congress, to do their thing, and the things he quickly does only benefit his base, and no one else.

Citation please.

Never mind. I found it.

Lerner herself launched her agency's scandal with a planted question-and-answer exchange during a May 10 American Bar Association conference.
Asked the pre-arranged question, Lerner responded by conceding that her employees had acted inappropriately.
'Instead of referring to the cases as advocacy cases, they actually used case names on this list,' she told the assembled tax lawyers.
'They used names like "tea party" or "Patriots," and they selected cases simply because the applications had those names in the title. That was wrong. That was absolutely incorrect, insensitive, and inappropriate — that’s not how we go about selecting cases for further review.'
She later claimed that the increase in scrutiny of tea party groups was due to an influx of new applications from right-wing organizations, following the Supreme Court's 'Citizens United' ruling, which opened the floodgates to greater political participation by nonprofit advocacy groups.

So, Learner admitted to the extra scrutiny and why. She refused to answer questions about what she knew her employees knew and technical questions about each case, taking the 5th, on her lawyer's advice.

Guilty of what? Disorganization?

There was a whole new set of rules after the Supreme Court ruled in Citizen's United that money equal speech. (Bad SOTUCS decision, IMO) So, there was an incredible influx of new politically oriented non-profit political organizations (PACS), colleting millions upon millions of dollars, be screened. She admitted that they were handled poorly, but there was no precedent for these kinds of organizations before.
