The mission of US aircraft in Syria to to fight terrorism. Doing anything else and they may be liable to be shot down by air defense.

Perhaps it’s just that Iranian pilots are too timid and unskilled to actually join the battle.

Americans and Iranians don't kill each other. They kill Sunni terrorists. They are good allies.

The first time a fighter jet shot down a UCAV was when a MiG-25 shot down a Predator in 2002 over Iraq.

In the future, yes. I've never said they won't be able to. But they're years away from that capability, regardless of who we're talking about. None even have an air to air radar system mounted yet, let alone a fire control system that could handle an AAM.

IIRC Iran shot or otherwise got ahold of one of our (US) drones a few years ago
wonder if they got some of our tech

source: en.wikipedia.org...

On 10 December 2011, Iran announced that it intended to carry out reverse engineering on the captured RQ-170 Sentinel stealth aircraft. In April 2012, the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution claimed to have succeeded in extracting the entirety of the data collected by the drone and are currently in the process of building a replica of the aircraft. Iran claimed to have been approached by countries, including China and Russia, seeking information on the drone. Although U.S. officials expressed concern over the possibility of China or Russia receiving the drone's technology, they cast doubt on whether Iran could replicate the technology of the aircraft, as well as the amount of intelligence data available, due to the precautions installed for malfunctioning drones. On May 2014, Iranian state TV displayed what was claimed to be a reverse engineered RQ-170. Sources familiar with the RQ-170's design say that the Iranian RQ-170 is merely a static mock-up rather than a flyable aircraft. In November 2014 Iran claimed to have carried out a successful test flight of an aircraft based on reverse engineering of the RQ-170

They've gotten their hands on a number of UAVs. The Shahed 129 bears more than a passing resemblance to the IAI Hermes 450. A couple others resemble other UAVs that are out there as well.

UAVs are both easy and hard to build, so using ones that they got their hands on to give them a leg up is smart. Russia is doing something similar by buying outside UAVs while they get their own programs sorted out.

Those who fight a common enemy and are on good terms are allies. America and Iran need each other to fight Sunni terrorists.
