I have just finished reading a book by a man named Ken Alibek reguarding the Soviet Unions germ warfare research and development.
Ken Alibek rose to become the 2nd highest member of an orginastion called Biopreperat ( an alias for the Soviet bio weapons program; which took up a sizale amount of the military budget ). He is also credited with developing the most powerful strain of anthrax ( using an Indian strain ) ever produced and developing a powdered form of Anthrax which could be packed into SS-18 strategic rocket warheads for direct attack on the US.
Anyway the most desturbing revelations were the hybrid germs the soviets had come up with they include :

1.bubonic plague crossed with ebola
2.smallpox crossed with encephilitis

A lot of other deseases had their virilence increased and also made almost immune from antibiotics.
Their annual production of smallpox and anthrax was 20 tonnes a year !!!!

This is scary # if any of the deadlier strains ever made it to the general population !!!

Certainly explains why the U.S. has made darned sure the Soviet military leaders were taken care of with retirement and housing at the end of the cold war. Didn't need anyone with access finding it necessary to sell the stuff on the blackmarket or the Homeboy Shopping-Network!

now thats scary . though on the other hand , its amazing how much technology is put into eliminating 'each other' .
