we really need to roll back the telecommunications act of 1996. that act alone is what has caused so many large corporations to buy up all our media. not sure why anyone is even trying to debate that fact when this has been a hotly contested issue with the FCC since that act was rolled out under the premise that deregulating the market would open it up to more parties when in fact it just cracked it wide open for mega corps to purchase it up en masse

How is this a gaff? If anything, this is probably something that should have happened a long time ago. With huge news outlets like CNN fined millions due to broadcasting fake news (and they're not the only ones), something needs to happen.

I want my news unbiased, as they say "Just the facts ma'am". Save your personal opinions for op pieces. That's why we have 'em.

Trump does not seem to be aware that TV networks are not licensed. Another one of those complicated things he didn't know about.

However, the broadcasting towers are really the key.

They are highly regulated, by wattage and footprint.

Just a thought. Could he go after their broadcast licenses ?

Trump has no interest in going after broadcast networks. In fact, the FCC has been facilitating Sinclair Broadcast Group's domination of the US market.

August:

House Dems press FCC for answers on Sinclair

Since President Trump tapped Pai as chairman in January, the FCC has passed several proposals that have helped clear the way for Sinclair to buy up more local television stations.

Most notably, the commission voted in April to reinstate a rule that gives it greater room to acquire certain stations without running afoul of media ownership limits.

Critics say that rule, known as the ultra high frequency (UHF) discount, directly paved the way for Sinclair’s proposed $3.9 billion deal to purchase Tribune Media, which is awaiting FCC approval.

Today:

Right-wing Sinclair Broadcast Group snubs FCC, gets away with it

Sinclair Broadcast Group is planning to merge with Tribune Media Company, in a deal that would make it the nation's largest broadcaster. Yet in the process, the conglomerate has refused to honor a request from the Federal Communications Commission: a list of TV stations it has to sell in order to meet ownership limits.

In a document filed on Thursday, Sinclair said licenses in at least two markets would have to be sold to meet current national TV station ownership limits, the Baltimore Sun reported.

The lack of transparency in the merger poses a unique and seldom-discussed threat to newsrooms across the country.

If the $3.9 billion merger with Tribune Media Co. is approved, the broadcaster would own 233 television stations and reach 72 percent of households in the country, the Sun reported.

Sinclair is extremely pro-Trump. John Oliver had an interesting segment about Sinclair:

The so-called President continues to take advantage of the less informed people of the US, doesn't he?

When looking at a map of the world, young Americans had a difficult time correctly identifying Iraq (1 in 7) and Afghanistan (17%). This isn’t that surprising, but only a slim majority (51%) knew where New York was. According to Forbes and National Geographic, an alarming 29% couldn’t point to the Pacific Ocean

thoughtcatalog.com...

Obama's advisors didn't mince words on this issue. One example...

Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage. And basically, call it the stupidity of the American voter or whatever, but basically that was really really critical to get, for this legislation to pass.

What does any of this have to do with what Donald Trump said? Donald Trump isn't anti-consolidation, he's anti-criticism. Trump isn't pro-truth, he's pro-Trump's version of everything.

I think the sources for the NBC reporting should out themselves and call Donald Trump out for the liar he is. Let the chips fall where they may. The fact that this PoS would even suggest closing down media outlets for being critical of him or anyone else in government is mind-boggling. That people are defending him is appalling. That it really seems like he did it over such a trivial thing as whether or not Tillerson remarked in private that he was a moron just takes the effing cake.

Markets consolidate. That's just a fundamental property of markets in a capitalist economy. Six is a surprisingly robust number of major players for a mature market.

I'm not saying it's a good thing by any stretch, just that it's not surprising. I think what we should really focus on now is the newest media market, the web. That's why something like net neutrality should be a concern for everyone because without it, we empower ISPs to make the playing field drastically less level than it already is.

You're talking about robberbarron'esque clammoring towards monopolism as if its some normal thing to be expected. Even though whats being robbed in this era is our minds. But hey they mostly pay lip service to your party political agenda so just go with it, right?
