I have always wondered if the earth is a Sentient Being. Is this planet alive?

Seeing as she is filled with life , i would say she sure is alive. She the mama bear keeping us safe from the predators in space knows as the radiation

Sentient Being? Sure on auto pilot with no feelings or emotions as far as we know ! It does get moody tho once and a while and throw a bunch of natural disasters. but probably byproduct of its auto pilot. Doesn't know any better .

Sentient? No. Alive? Yes.

The Earth is a living organism in the same way plants are living organisms.

No , just no.
The Earth is a gazillion ton rock , made up of left-over space junk from the Big Bang...
Brought to you by the words gravity and mass and the numbers 4 and 2 (42)

Sentient - really? If it's alive surely it must have some notion of existence, would it not?

Why is it improbable to think that something could evolve to exist as a planetary sentience ?

All the other dead planets around us . that can't even hold life......

Sure we can say millions of plants must have life... But so far. 0

No it's not.

Plants breathe something that would kill us.

Co2.

The earth is an incredibly complex structure, a molten heart, interaction's caused by gravity with other celestial body's especially the sun and the moon but also the other planet's of our solar system, there is more than one type of weather as well, we only know of the atmospheric weather in the thin membrane of gas that covers our world but beneath the crust the earth is still a molten world, full of convection current's, stream's of hot energy are also undoubtedly present driven by the same gravitation and rotational forces.

Is it alive, yes as other's have argued in the sense that all life on it's surface (AND IN IT's CRUST) form's a single biosphere, one perhaps compartmentalized into different specialist sub biosphere's.

If we have a soul and I contend that we do then the question you are really asking is does the earth have a soul and I think it highly likely that it may.

From the book of revelation.
Then from the mouth of the serpent spewed water like a river to overtake the woman and sweep her away in the torrent. 16But the earth helped the woman and opened its mouth to swallow up the river that had poured from the dragon’s mouth. 17And the dragon was enraged at the woman, and went to make war with the rest of her children, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore

So even in the major religions' of the world the earth is seen as having some kind of sentience.

Science on the other hand would argue as far as we know the answer is no BUT only as far as WE know which is not very much as it happen's.

Maybe we are its notion if existence. We did come from it after all.

we use CO2 levels as a stimulus to breathe , think about drowning.

CO2 becomes an anaesthetic @ 50 percent.

Sure it can kill us but has alot of other functions too

but that doesn't change they are alive , and have an electrical pulse we can actually measure , with stress . and reactions.

Do humans merely exist as a means for the planet to achieve sentience?

My point is I just asked the ground how it was feeling today and go figure I didn't get an answer.

Humans sure do love to anthropomorphize inanimate objects.

That's for damn sure.

I should shut up but there are limitations on what the human eye can see..I'll say no more for the moment

Maybe... but the biosphere could be seen as such, especially.

Read the old James Lovelock book The Gaia Hypothesis ... been 40 some years since I read it, but the few specifics he found sure indicate some level of intelligence in the system of life. One that stuck out was a specific molecule needed for life being brought out of the ocean, onto land, through a system that only seemed to exist to transport that specific (forgotten) molecule.

The blood coursing through your veins, energy bringing thoughts into words from your brain and the wake that your life leaves behind it on this earth are all forms of love, pain and communication that have existed on this earth for millions of years. The idea of sentience is broad and far reaching. The plants and animals communicate and understand the planet in ways that we aren't capable of processing. It's a complicated and dynamic web that exists all around us, and it is intricately woven through the life of this planet. There is no way of knowing how far reaching the understanding our planet has in all this.

My answer would be that since we see ourselves as being sentient, and we can't really define any clear boundary that separates us from the planet, then yes, in some way planet earth is sentient.
