The Miners Strike was a complex affair involving three sides.

The miners did not have public support.

Very sad that many miners were aggressive and violent to those miners who did not strike. Very sad that the police were often a bit violent too, but then the miners were violent back. A bonus of the Miner's Strike was that the NUM was beaten and their ability to damage industry was curtained.

The public supported change to union laws and bad practices such as intimidation and flying pickets came to an end. Frankly the public were sick of the militant unions that presided over wilful harm of industry.

The strike also accelerated the pit closure and the short-term impact on communities was devastating. My wife lived in a mining community and was a witness to the impact.

Thatcher was a product of her time. She polarises opinion even today. People on the left still dislike her, - even those who were born decades after her time - but imagine the UK stuck in the 1970s ,and you get a world that Thatcher challenged and changed.

I'm self employed so I don't get the whole striking sheep thing, don't like it, nobody's forcing you to work wherever. Employees are like calves suckling on a teat in my mind.

That said, and on topic, nothing will change in my world in a post Brexit no deal situation. I'll still find work and chase the coin as I always have. It's the lazy entitled bastards who will suffer, and maybe it's a good thing because there are too many of them. Oh noes, the government should give me a house and free milk for my kids...get a #ing grip lol

well my parents have done no bad in their miserable existence
my maw started work in poundstretchers she is now the finance manager of edinburgh Uni
ma dad was fortunate enough to get a huge pay off from Forth Ports Plc when they changed the shift patterns
to bring in new workers and forced the older guys out.
They were heavily compensated and so he took early retirement.

My parents were lucky enough to get so far from hard work , and they have bought themselves a nice wee bit of land in the farming belt in the central belt.

So hopefully I will inherit that , my dad says take him oot back and shoot him instead of hospital ahahahha

My salary is no where near enough to afford a house , I couldnt get a mortgage if I tried , even with my fiance's salary combined.
Im 35 this year on Oct 26th and I dont think I'll ever be able to afford a house , how #ed up is that.
The only house I'll own is my parents when they kick the bucket

Mate im a government employee and I havent had a pay rise in line with inflation since the economy collapsed as the first recession since 9/11 then that double dip !

Im still on the same wages I was 8 years ago

Bin men get paid more than me !

but I cant get a job as a binman as its near impossible to get into with the council
same with fire service there arent enough positions.

Striking to be paid a living wage the same as every one else is fair in my book , especially when its protected by Law !

I wonder what the UK government would do if all the Scottish people who were on strike for better pay just started marching towards westminster
like say there was 2 million of us , what could they do ?
not that it would happen but it would be pretty mad.

Never read the Daily Mail. If you cannot cope with history without revising to fit your present day worldview, then you read the Fantasy Times.

To topic. Nice to see the EU are starting to "prepare to talk trade", which may be a sign that the hard-line obstinacy set by Merkel, Macron and the other ideologues is starting to soften. Although probably not.

Hopefully, they paid for property by now and their mortgage days are over because i thought along similar lines and im pretty much in the same financial position as yourself, then the last recession hit, building trade went to crap, and the result was my parents were forced to sell the family home to one of these places that buy them and then let them live there until they die, then rake in the cash.

Job vacancies in Scotland
Sorry to be blunt but you are not forced to stay in the current employment you are moaning about. Find something else if you're unhappy.
Being self employed I 'strike' or turn down work often if someone is unwilling to pay the going rate for a job, then I hunt other work as I do every day.
You work for the government you say? So sick pay, paid holidays, pension etc. I get none of that but you'll never find me moaning online because I love the freedom. You sound like you are an indentured slave - your choice fella, nobody else's.

And as for Scot's marching on Westminster, what for? More money per head of population is already spent in Scotland than anywhere in England. You got free prescriptions, free uni education, and more.
I'm not begrudging all the socialist perks you get which I don't in Southern England, but I'm sick of listening to you all whining that life is so bad.

Me, I don't give a toss because I depend on the state for nothing except healthcare and make my own money chasing my own customers. My choice, as it is your choice to stay in your 'government job' whining they don't pay you enough.
#ing leave it then and find something else...see link above

ETA
Your job is funded solely by the taxes of others. Even the tax you 'pay' through PAYE is funded by the taxes of others. Heck, if you got a council house your life would pretty much be funded entirely by the taxes of others. I hunt my work out daily, I pay taxes for services I don't use, and you know what? I don't whine because it is my choice alone. Whining about doing a job is lame, it is your choice to do that job.
Again, sorry to be so blunt but I tell mates exactly that when they are whining like little girls.

My next door neighbour has done it too. Couldn't believe it when she told me. Now she's lost everything and can't afford to eat half the time and she's really unwell. Those companies that buy up houses then reant them back, it's scandalous but what can you do when things get out of hand financially?

Don't get too concerned about not getting on the ladder, there's going to be a vey big property price correction coming very soon. What gos up must come down and vice versa, this Brexit lunacy is going to kill off our very fragile economy so expect a house price collapse soon. Interest rates are going up too at some point which should pull back prices. Anyway the whole market is just one load of crock. The prices are a con, look at France for real property prices and what you can get for your dosh, our property market is totally nuts. People work all their lives to pay off the debt on a hose that only a generation or two ago was given to you effectively free by the the councils. houses eat your dosh too, there's always something that needs mending / refreshing and costs spiral out of control, why can't they make a flippin combi boiler that isn't 'designed' to eff up in one month past its warranty! Housing in the UK is a scandal........................ I'm sick of them and looking to buy a nice bit of land (an acre of two) around Bakewell with a nice big tree on it and build a tree house there and live a life like Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.

Which Britain is everyone whining about, the one where people want to work and provide for themselves, or the one where lazy bastards want it all handed on a plate?
3 million EU nationals prove that Britain has a fair share of lazy bastards who don't want to work. My neighbours are a young couple from Poland both working hard in minimum wage jobs, renting a nice house and saving for a deposit to buy their first place.
He packs frozen pies in a factory, she wipes old people's bums, you know, the jobs British people whine about.

Dragons Den has a lot to answer for. British people in general have got a superiority complex about the world of work that never existed years ago. They don't want to get their hands dirty!

Interesting thoughts, and I agree many people are scared of a bit of hard work, hence EU nationals to fill the gap created by lazy Brits.
Many of my closest friends now are from Eastern Europe, all working hard and living decent lives as I do. I'm kind of in love with one from Czech and she is chasing me but I'm scared of committment and need to make a decision soon or the jewel will slip through my fingers lol.
I'll say one thing though, I absolutely love the strength of drive and passion in her and all my EU mates, it's something that needs to be prescibed to millions of lazy Brits by the NHS.

I'm fed up listening to those who say Eastern Europeans work harder than the lazy Brits. Natural born and bred Brits, Scots, English, Irish, Welsh have dug us out a hole with their bare hands countless times, Hard graft back breaking jobs mixed with blood and sweat. We/us hard working brits also rescued millions of eastern europeans from fascism with our own blood and tears. we built a NHS, Hundreds of thousands of social housing, bridges, sewer systems, tunnels, railways,we mined, we built great monuments that will last lifetimes, we built huge ships, invented so much. Yet we are all of a sudden and bunch of Lazy Bastards.. Short #ing memories.

Maybe the fact that Thatcher and successive governments have ripped the heart out of our hardest working communities plays a massive part in our supposed lethargy. They took away the community sprit and replaced it with mind numbing low pay # jobs that leave you #ing suicidal.

Do me a Favour...copy and paste this into goolge.. 'Work makes me'

Well done all those eastern european migrants workers, Well done indeed, but you know what, We did it for thousands of #ing years before you. If we all could move to another country, earn 4 times our annual salary, Claim child benefit and save enough to build a house back home we would. Please tell me as a brit where i can move to in Europe that allows me to do this?

The reality for the Eastern European is, He pays around £40 a week rent and gas and council tax because most live 10 deep in the one property and share the bill at the end of the week. We/us born and bred here on the other hand prefer to live like we have always done, you know, with a wife and children in a family home. Once the rent, gas and council tax food etc is payed we dont have enough left for a decent holiday never mind enough to build a property somehwhere.

I know all this because have worked with hundres of Hungarians for years and watch them buy houses left right and centre back home..Some who have been here only 8 years now have three properties with a few acres of land on each. one has 2 properties and shares in a nightclub. I take my hat off to them and wish them all the best, but not one of them has ever worked harder on the job than i do, I choose not to live in rat infested accomodation 10 deep and leave my wife and kids back home.

I'm not a lazy Scot and neither was my father and father before him and neither are my children, but are we prepared to pick #ing strawberries and work mind numbing low paid jobs...Are we #.

The NHS you praise is absolutely dependent on EU workers. The social care system is equally dependent on EU workers. If you end up dribbling in your tea cup it'll likely be an EU national wiping your arse, not a Brit.
All my EU mates live in flats and houses like me, not sharing rooms. You solely mentioned Hungarians and they are a small percentage of the 3 million EU folk here...you're talking bollocks to be fair, and my point stands, EU people fill the gaps where lazy Brits won't do the work.

Haha cheers, we're hooking up this weekend and I'll immerse myself in her crazy passionate Czech love! ...she wipes old people's bums as well, works 50 hours a week and lives in a nice rented flat on her own. Not like the lazy whining Brits some other members deny even exist lol

If your Czech bird works for the NHS as a domestic nurse/Carer she will be earning £13-£15 an hour just like my wee neighbour friend. By any manner of means that is not the low paid jobs i'm talking about, ie minimum wage.

Btw My Sister works in a private care home wiping arses for much less than those in the NHS.

The Eastern Europeans i worked with were 100% Hungarian. We had a few Poles in day shift including the brother of the worlds strongest man (big #er) but they never lasted long, quite a few had serious drink problems. Of the 50 or so workers on my shift at least 60% were Hungarian the rest Scots. And please feel free to point out where i'm talking bollocks.
