Most likely they eat fungus and bacteria that land on you, preventing these microbes from infecting your skin.

There is topical permethrin and oral Ivermectin, Dr. prescribed or human OTC. As well as other topical washes and even natural options.

In I'm afraid plucking your eyelashes out might be the only full removal of these. These buggers do live in your eyelash follicles as well, it's symbiotic in that case. At least it's demodex and not sarcoptic-as seem in dire cases of mangy animals.

That would be my thinking also. Without such little critters, our immune system would have to function a hell of a lot more efficiently and be taxed beyond its ability to fight off infection or disease.
