We shouldn't mock. Belgium is, after all, home to many of the world's leading mountain experts.

VEI5 so less than 1/10 the potential output of Krakatoa. Latest graphs suggest magma is just under the cone so could erupt any hour. Hopefully everybody stays well clear as last time it erupted it generated massive pyroclastic flows.

Hi glend.

Could you provide a link to these graphs showing that it will erupt within the hour?

UTC time is 16:44 as I post this.

Thx

If it did climb up to VEI 6 (Krakatoa), keep in mind that was also the size of Pinatubo. Just to give us some perspective from what most of us have lived through.

VEI 5 is more like Mt. St. Helens.

Despite Rising Volcano Threat, Bali Authorities Tell Residents To Return Home

But now, just one day after a massive crack appeared in the crater, the Indonesian government is urging more than half of the evacuees to return home. "On the other hand, as many as 73,000 people from more than 51 villages that live outside the danger zone are safe and can go home". AliveForFootball aliveforfootball.com...

This seems a little strange, I mean, why were they told to evacuate in the first place if it was already "SAFE"????

Close to 144,000 residents - including tens of thousands who live outside the zone - heeded the government's warning. "They need to go back to their village because they will become a burden", Bali's governor I Made Mangku Pastika said.

And this was the reasoning????

Theyve been saying the eruption is IMMINENT for a few days now.

But please.....Return home. Youll be "OK"

I think they are assuming the eruption will be of a certain size. So long as it does not exceed that size, the ones they send home should be safe because they're outside the immediate danger zone.

They're assuming this won't be any worse than Mt. St. Helens, but there is always the chance this could go bigger to Pinatubo and maybe even become a caldera forming event. However, if it does become a caldera event (next to no chance of this) it would be a worldwide catastrophe, not just a local disaster.

Thanks for the footage link. I love that place.
I'm a little ashamed to say I've been to Bali half a dozen times and don't remember learning there was an active volcano there.

Shame on me!

There are so many of them in Indonesia that it's like not being aware of blue ringed octopus. They're all over (Oz), but your chances of being hit by one at any particular moment aren't that great.

That, and the tourist industry doesn't tend to talk about it a lot.

I didn't say I was unaware of that, I said I was unaware of Bali in particular....It was never something I was aware of regarding insurance etc when visiting there.
I hope you tread on a Blue ring octopus.
Smartarse.
