First came the smart phone and then eventually the Internet of Things took off, giving us smart thermostats and smart refrigerators. Now, welcome to the world of the smart jersey. That's right, for $110 or $200, you can buy a Nike NBA replica jersey of your favorite player that connects to your mobile phone.

The tag on the jersey, when viewed with your Android or Apple mobile phone using the NikeConnect app, will bombard you with a wealth of NBA marketing as well as all kinds of highlights, stats, and team and player information. It also provides marketers with the Holy Grail of advertising opportunities. Once the jersey is activated, Nike knows who bought the jersey, where that buyer lives, and where and when the jersey was scanned.

Nike says tapping the tag will give you team and player content including "pregame arrival footage and highlight packages." Better still, "Tap in on game day to get additional access to exclusive offers" from the app's "Offers" tab. Other "to-be-announced experiences" are coming soon. Scanning the tag also shows a countdown to the next time your favorite team plays and updates a chosen player's stats during a game and provides game highlights as well.

I'm sure lots of people will line up to buy these and I'm guessing other sports leagues will follow. One more way to pay big companies to track your every movement. I wonder how long until the tracking technology starts getting put into regular clothing as well. Just think special offers and tracking included in everything you wear.

Wait till this is how you play in drafts, co-worker: " No smart Jersey? can't play, sorry, just go buy one really fast "

Working in marketing myself, this is only the beginning, they already have beacons, which can send you push messages and if tapped into, could send the same data to an app.

Wait for the hacks to work around seeing the few interesting pieces of information without needing the jersey.

Just buying a high dollar membership.

The jersey should just say "Property of" denoting they own your dumb ass. Oh wait thsts all of them already. An odd thing about fashionites... All those logos on they clothes youliterally pay them to sport their logo and thus advertise for them like the ultimate tool ever. So thats the surreal, this new tech makes real life a dystopian flick.

Hey why steal someones Jordans after knocking them out when now you can knock them out and take the shoes and the shirt... Yeah it sounds cruel, but this is what is going to happen.

Your headline should read "for the low, low price of 200$"
