Let's conduct a quick thought experiment. Imagine you're standing in the middle of a city with all of its noise and commotion; the horns blaring, construction equipment running, etc. Loud and obnoxious, right?

If you don't think so then imagine that you're standing out in nature next to a slow-moving river, what do you hear? You hear birds chirping, the wind blowing, water trickling, etc. Very calming and relaxing right? It is in total contrast to what you experience in a city.

On the other hand, you've got cicada bugs and crickets. Every evening, after sunset, I walk the dog. The noise is almost unbearable. I get the same sense of annoyance as car horns and construction equipment.

Nature can make a lot of noise too.

When I was younger I remember thinking the same as OP. I had been nursing on the same education. They teach you humans are polluting and desecrating the natural world. The pace is increasing exponentially. They teach we probably won't succeed because we're greedy halfwits. This education is teaching us to hate ourselves as failure is the expected outcome. And all of this is soaked into the democrat and green parties; maybe some others. It's hard to find a democrat who doesn't inherently hate a free market because the (apparent) environmental and humane impacts. But I think they confuse socialism with lawful business. A free market can have laws too.

So what happened? How did I grow out of it? Well, I learned to appreciate our history. My judgement of history in prior years was negative, wrathful. I felt we were ignorant abusers in the past, and so I felt no wisdom resided there. In recent years, my judgements softened. I now feel history possesses wisdom. The future is not just an improvement on the past. Instead of trashing our technology and hard won place in the world, we should seek instead to find a middleground, a place where the negativity and unwarranted optimism don't afflict us. Where emotions flare, this balance is threatened.

So I do think we should be doing things to reduce our impacts on the environment and its ecosystems. But I don't feel it should be draconian in nature. I also think progress can mean a lot of things. Progress might mean engineering our planet, just as we medicate mental disorders. Engineering our planet is a new paradigm, it's one that makes many of us uncomfortable. To some amount we have to acknowledge the presence of an idealism many of us harbour about this planet and its past. Many would choose to strive for a planet ONLY resembling the past. This vision of our planet is hostile towards humanity's presence on Earth, and ultimately nihilistic. It idolizes a Lost Eden which--in all likelihood--never existed. To move forward, we have to recognize both the future and the past. Idealism should be countered with pragmatism--and realism.

This post is my attempt to merge what I was 15 years ago with what I am now. 15 years ago I hated humanity--and hence hated myself. Now I don't love or hate it. I like to think I see what is and don't have feelings about it. Feelings are trouble. Objectivity isn't required.
