Opinions are fine (in my opinion - go figure), but they should only be formulated after having a a mind open enough to have learned all you can about the subject; In my daily life I don't offer my opinion on subjects I'm not sure about. I might ask someone who has an opposing viewpoint to clarify some things about the subject and then do some looking around online to see if those things are true.

If people would take the time to learn as much as they can instead of reacting in a knee-jerk fashion if their beliefs are questioned, I think we'd have less hatred or fear.

Hey, we all have beliefs that vary. We should respect others beliefs unless they shove their beliefs down our throats. We are here to debate issues, not start arguments. Constructive criticism should always be contemplated on, if for nothing else other than to strengthen our understanding of how others interpret what they have heard. Consensus of the time is not always the truth, it is often just a belief.

I would have to say ignoring differences is much more damaging than exploring them. Tolerance is not blind acceptance, it's understanding opposing viewpoints without taking offense. Ignoring the difference without trying to understand why the difference exists is missing half of the story.
Putting yourself in someone else's shoes sometimes requires dialog and exploration of different life choices based on a huge number of variables. A little insight into another person's viewpoint can only enrich your own experience. Saying "you believe that and that's OK" is great for diffusing immediate tension but not exploring why that person holds that belief is doing them a disservice if long term understanding is the goal.
