It´s a bug.
I found out the mechanism to spawn it two years ago and reported it to SO.

If you find a member that registered before stars were introduced and they have inconsistent statistic like "flags: " or "flags: 0" and you give them a star, it will produce them a million stars. Some zero division or similar happening.

It was relayed to my by skeptic that this is the issue but I never got a cookie for finding out

Lemme tell you though, it doesn't live up to the hype. I worked really hard for mine and I was expecting a huge parade with statues being erected in my honor, but apparently nobody even noticed but me. Now it's just like, meh.
