So when you socialize with others, your feelings shut down?

Everything I said is a fact as well. What remains is what's the more sensible way to look at it. Economists, people who are experts in things like this, look at per GDP when they compare such stats between countries. You want to look at it another way because it fits your worldview, not because it is the more effective way of comparing it. We can disagree. I furnished you with new information you don't wanna hear. Perhaps with time, you'll open your mind to it.

Look, if you want to show me a better comparison than dollar-to-dollar ... show me one that demonstrates similar military capabilities. I'm not wedded to the "spend more do more" paradigm ... except it seems to be the only one that relates to reality.

Other than that, we disagree.

On the contrary. It is just that I do not refer to my inner feelings when discussing outside affairs.

Off the grid is admirable. My dad tried to do it in the 70s. I learned a lot. Those tactics can really help out in the "lean times" that inevitably come along in everyone's life.

The internet ... ah ... when I'm not here obsessively arguing with you guys over mostly silly stuff ... I don't think I would want to live without it. Any music from many time periods, movies and tv shows from my childhood and before ... order something and it's at your door in an hour. I admit it, I'm spoiled.

And I won't be around to bother you guys after TSHTF, LOL. That's a plus I guess.

Thanks for taking the time to really talk. I need reminding that we're all just folks trying to get along.

Socialism favors the laziest of society at the expense and burden of the Nation ...It represents communal misery and stifles ingenuity and free enterprise. And when the number sponging off of the government inevitably outnumbers the number paying the bill, it collapses in on itself and heartless dictatorships are born from the scraps of it's most elite. The rich get richer. The poor get poorer. Social unrest ensues. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. It is an unsustainable system of government. #Venezuela

Well hopefully you talk to people at gatherings as opposed to typing to them.

Spend more to do more fails to take into account different strategic goals between countries, different alliances, all kinds of things. The essence of what I said was to demonstrate that we're not spending too much on our military. Whether you want to admit it or not, most of the time when people trot out the old "more than the next x countries" line, they're insinuating we spend too much. We don't. When adjusted for GDP or % of budget or just about any other sensible metric when comparing differing economies, our spending is perfectly reasonable. If anything it's low considering everything we do. If you want to get into whether we should be doing xyz, that's a whole other discussion. I won't further derail this thread.

I have been saying this for years. Even looking at the other end of it, wealthy (we're not talking uber rich here) and even middle class do NOT want a socialist society. I will assert that middle class is already feeling biggest pinch from even the bits and pieces that Obama has already brought to our country.

This is absolutely correct. Also, they're suffering for no reason. The end goal will never be reached. It's a pipe dream that you'll ever get rid of the filthy rich in a socialist system. Even in what are considered "socialist" countries today (they're in quotes because even they are not socialist enough for the idealogues), there are still people who just know how to work the system better than others or are involved with the right entities, whether it's with the government or whatever, and they wind up with more than others. The only way you could ever really make sure no one has excessive wealth is a Dark Knight Rises anarchy scenario where you just smash in and take it if you decide they've exceeded some arbitrary threshold.

They are uneducated and woefully misinformed on how the economy was designed to work.

You are uneducated if you think America was "designed" to be a capitalist country. The pilgrims lived in a mostly agrarian society, nothing remotely like the capitalist hell that we live in now.

The people that are most for capitalism are the worst people in society- the cruel, the selfish and the psychopaths.

This might be the most uneducated post of this thread. You've been drinking down way too much propaganda.

Wait, the "rich get richer and the poor get poorer" is your argument against socialism? Even though socialism is the one that believes in wealth redistribution? People tend to forget that Chavez's Venezuela reduced poverty by a massive amount.

the percentage of households in poverty fell from 55% in 1995 to 26.4% in 2009. When Chávez was sworn into office unemployment was 15%, in June 2009 it was 7.8%. Compare that to current unemployment figures in Europe.

www.theguardian.com...

A separate article lists some of the following other positive economic changes that happened under Chavez's socialist policies there (HERE):

• Unemployment has dropped from 14.5% of the total labour force in 1999 to 7.6% in 2009
• Population has increased from 23,867,000 in 1999 to 29,278,000 in 2011. The annual population growth was 1.5% in 2011 compared with 1.9% in 1999
• GDP per capita has risen from $4,105 to $10,801 in 2011
• Poverty has decreased - in 1999, 23.4% of the population were recorded as being in extreme poverty, this fell to 8.5% in 2011 according to official government figures
• Infant mortality is now lower than in 1999 - from a rate of 20 per 1,000 live births then to a rate of 13 per 1,000 live births in 2011
• Oil exports have boomed - Venezuela has one of the top proven oil reserves in the world and in 2011 Opec put the country's net oil export revenues at $60bn. In 1999 it stood at $14.4bn

In no way am I saying things are perfect there or were perfect there under Chavez. But socialism can have dramatically positive results on the economic conditions in a country or community, as Arab majority countries that follow the "Arab Socialism" ideology can attest to (the same goes for European socialist policies). But people seem to overlook just how much we've sabotaged Venezuela, even going so far as to place economic sanctions and sponsor a military coup there. But we're supposed to act like those policies aren't contributing to their suffering, only socialism is? Yeah right.

I agree 100%. Let's burn away all of the socialism in the United States of America.

Welfare and HUD. Get rid of it. Work to eat and pay rent.
Medicaid and Medicare. Go get a job with benefits old guys.
Public schools. Pay for your own daycare American workers.
Libraries. Buy your own damned books.
Roads and bridges. Build your own.
Disaster relief. You shouldn't live in places where disasters happen.
National parks and public lands. Sell them all off and pay off the national debt.
Military pay and benefits. Serving your country is its own reward.
Congressional, Judicial and Executive pay. Ditto.
Corporate tax breaks and capital gains. If corporations are people, then they should pay the same #ty 20% that I do.

With many forms of socialism you still own your personal property. (House, car, clothes) Socialism is meant to do away with private businesses( privately owned means of production, distribution, and exchange of the previous items) in the sense that every worker should own a share of the company and as such has shareholder voting rights with that company. I.e. giving power to the masses instead of the 1%. Which contrary to popular belief would empower everyday workers and allow for society to flourish.
