In contrast to your title, I'd say the bible is too hard on sin.
Modern Christianity preaches of eternal hell-fire for just a few short years of sin. The punishment doesn't fit the crime.
To be damned for an eternity in hell would be cruel and torture. The real God would not do such a thing.
The main reason I don't believe in Hell. Or the Biblical God.
The word used for hell in the Bible (the Greek word ᾅδης or háidēs) means grave.
Revelation 20:12-15 KJV "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the
book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead
which were in it;
and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
And
death and hell were cast into the lake of fire.
This is the second death.
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was
cast into the lake of fire."
As you can see, it makes no sense for death and hell to be cast into the lake of fire, unless hell means grave. There is no hell, only the grave.
All who die are asleep until the second coming (or after the thousand year reign) when they are resurrected.
Revelation 21:8 KJV "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all
liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."
The lake of fire for humans is punishment and eternal destruction. Some burn longer than others, according to their works, but not for eternity.
They will burn up and cease to exist, because they turned away from God and chose sin over salvation. Each man makes a choice in his life.
The dead in Christ will be resurrected at the second coming. The wicked that are alive will perish from the upheaval on the earth (earthquakes the
likes of which will destroy mountains and make islands disappear. Hail so big it'll pulverize everything. Utter destruction.
Revelation 16:21 KJV "
And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent (100lbs!!): and men
blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great."
Speaking of the second coming...
Revelation 6:14 KJV "And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together;
and every mountain and island were moved out of their
places."
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 KJV "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God:
and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the
Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
The wicked dead will not be resurrected until after the thousand year reign of Jesus Christ.
Revelation 20:5 KJV "But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection."
The only fiery hell in the Bible is the one after the thousand year reign, when the wicked are resurrected and allowed to roam outside New Jerusalem.
Satan is loosed from his prison and gathers the wicked for the final battle, but end up being consumed by the lake of fire.
Revelation 20:7-10 "And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, And shall go out to deceive the nations which
are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went
up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and
devoured them. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be
tormented day and night for ever and ever."
So, no, fiery hell doesn't exist when you die, you simply sleep and await your judgement. If you're saved, you are resurrected at the second coming.
If you are wicked and not saved, you are resurrected after the thousand year reign to face your demise.
