Excellent information and citation.

So, would you say it's fair to claim that Lincoln saw slavery as a "necessary evil" but a "political expedient" while firmly supporting the idea that White people are innately superior to Black people?

There's just no getting around that the alleged Founder of the Republican Party was pro-slavery and White Supremacy.

In order of conviction:

1) The Constitution and preservation and welfare of the Union
2) Deeply morally opposed to the institution of slavery
3) Convinced of the superiority of whites over "colored" people

In this framework, he felt no obligation to end slavery in the south under the constitution.
He believed slavery was a wound to the nation, but was going to go extinct on it's own.
The Southern States wanted slavery expanded to the new territories..aka..the bulk of what is the USA today.
Lincoln/The federal government forbid it.
The South rebelled.

Reverting to his first obligation of preserving the union and constitution...and after repeatedly denying requests for emancipation..he emancipated African Americans...to add 100k plus troops to the North and Undermine the Southern Troops.

He did it for pragmatic purposes and to win the war and preserve the Union, but it was in keeping with his moral view.
Once committed he was all-in on emancipation and it could not happen in half-measures.

Personally deeply opposed to slavery as an institution...on moral grounds and because he thought it was a sickness to American Ideals.

Personally of the mind that whites were in most ways on average superior to African Americans.

Complicated man, but likely not unlike many, if not most, at the time.

You do not need to believe someone is your equal in order to deeply oppose their enslavement.

revere and honor Robert E Lee?

Bill Clinton

Hillary Clinton

Joe Biden

Barack Obama

Al Gore

Don't forget, Al gore's father voted against the civil rights act. It's laughable. And these people probably believe the myth of the southern strategy.

Sure the "white-wing" needs to talk about hypocrisy ...

Well, perhaps you should check with Ken Mehlman, RNC Chairman 2005-2007 ...

I'd love to see the evidence for this claim.

Try doing a bit of your own research for a change.

Hint: RNC Chairman Mehlman and President GW Bush apologized for the party's "Southern Strategy" to the same group of people.

Don't have to go that far back, you can find republicans last week that still buy the southern strategy bs (they were apologizing for it on TV after Charlottesville, because nothing screams racist like a white guy running into a white crowd). But southern strategy has been empirically disproven. Read the book "The end of Southern exceptionalism."

Republicans are like battered spouses of democrats. They hang on every word the dems say about them despite the obvious contempt dems have for them. If the reps think they can gain favor with dems and the media by telling a lie, they'll tell that lie over and over.

Hmm. It's not really a matter of "buying" the facts about the Southern Strategy ... it's known, acknowledged and documented fact.

Nothing has been "empirically disproven" regarding the flip that allowed the Republicans to pull in White Southerners into Reagans "Big Tent." Another dishonest assertion from you.

That said, the whole "right/left/Democrat/Republican" fiction becomes more and more boring to me. Enjoy your illusion.
