Five missing in Blackhawk crash

Survivors are the exception, not the rule, but are entirely possible. The water off Hawaii is warm enough that they can survive longer than other places.

Initial analysis of the debris shows the aircraft was uncontrolled when it hit the water. There were no rafts on board. The area they're searching drops off to 1,000 feet and the Navy is using ROVs to search underwater.

The search is as far as 160 miles out now, approaching Kauai. Total search area is 61,000+ square miles.

The Coast Guard officially suspended the search today. The search area covered 72,575 square nautical miles and extended out West of Niihau. The Army officially listed the crew as "Duty status-Whereabouts unknown".

Missing are:

>> Chief Warrant Officer 3 Brian M. Woeber, 41, Decatur, Ala.;

>> Chief Warrant Officer 2 Stephen T. Cantrell, 32, Wichita Falls, Texas;

>> Staff Sgt. Abigail R. Milam, 33, Jenkins, Ky.;

>> And Sgt. Michael L. Nelson, 30, Antioch, Tenn.

Steve and I were in 1ID 3-1 CAB together. We were the same age. He was an MTP (Maintenance Test Pilot) before I became a TI. The guy knew his aircraft.

Whatever took that aircraft down had to have been beyond his ability to recover and that of CW3 Woeber, who was his unit SP(Standardization Pilot). Both of these men and the CEs(Crew Chiefs) in the back were all well qualified. Whatever happened was well beyond their control.

I was going to say it sounds like they no time to react and this was some type of catastrophic failure.

God love those that are taken from us but they loved what did for a career
