We kind of know what we're doing with regards to nukes. We've been doing it longer than any other nation

How do you make that out ?

America didn't invent The Bomb. They where just one of three partners along with The U.K. and Canada.

Reach for a history book, it may help.

Link please to back that up . Trust but verify....

My pleasure.

Collaboration with the Manhattan Project As the United States organized preliminary research and administration, British scientific work remained far ahead. When President Roosevelt wrote to Churchill in August 1941 suggesting collaboration, Churchill responded unenthusiastically, preferring to keep the more advanced Tube Alloys project separate. British leaders were also concerned with security. While Britain already had secrecy restrictions in place due to World War II, the British thought that the United States, not yet involved in the war, could be a liability. The irony of the situation, however, was that by this time the British project was already infiltrated by several Soviet spies including Klaus Fuchs, Donald Maclean, and Guy Burgess.

which does appear to be the issue here.

Don't embarrass us Brits with your blind history, there was nothing said there was anti British and everything he said was right. We worked well with the US, we always have, but what the US did with Nukes regardless of our input, is beyond what we could afford, the best thing UK did was to give up on Blue Streak and others and partner with the US.

Our nuclear deterrent is perfect, its American built and we share it, there is no way the UK could do this without our allies in America, our submarines (our nuclear deterrent) is so expensive as it is that it risks cancellation from 4 year politicos, that is without having our own missile program and re-lifing an everything that may come with an ever ready nuclear ICBM.

It has to be reliable, tested, available, accurate and money talks to make this happen.

The UK could not have developed Polaris and Trident financially, yes, technology we are clever enough to do it because we have done this with the US, we are partners, allies.

It would be a grim day if the UK needed to drop Trident and try and negotiate their own nuclear ICBM, one so grim that its not considered.

What ?

The U.K. had a fully independent nuclear weapon system.

The last completely U.K. built nuclear bomb was The WE 177, which was carried by The RAF. It was withdrawn from service in 1998 when Britain decided to go fully submarine bases.
