They lost quite a few Tomcats to that never sufficiently damned TF30 engine. God that was a horrible engine.

Perhaps a stupid question, but how come it didn't blow?

Did he eject and ghost ride the plane down?

Because it's time to move on from those planes. The designs are nearing 50 years old.

It's actually pretty hard to get military aircraft to go up. They're designed with taking major damage and staying intact at least long enough for the pilots to leave the building. In this case, he punched during the rollout, which caused it to veer off until the grass and a main to let go imo.

We already have two aircraft types that the third generation is flying the same airframe. Not the same type, but the same tail numbers. We don't need more.

It sounds like it started in the engine and rapidly moved to other systems. He was heading to Sheik Isa Air Base, but wasn't able to make it that far, so went into the airport instead.

Oh I know you did. I know what it takes to get one of those rides. You're still a lucky bastard.

precisely what I was going to address... the landing was not a scheduled one
the aircraft was profiling to grab as much air as possible, hence the nose-up landing at a commercial airport...

Question? , was the landing at a desolate end of the runway configuration...
I say the Navy Pilot did a spectacular landing in the conditions he was under...

as for the depleated status of the Navy in all aspects of their mission ability--- the "Obama Funding Squeeze" was the primary source for the event---& not the lack of technical ability to make-shift & keep 'em flying...Clown #44 strikes again
