Are you talking about the prototype plasma energy weapon systems the US are working on, those do look very promising but I wonder how they are going to maintain a parcel of plasma tight enough to impact a target with the necessary force at range, they will likely only have limited range and that will also likely degrade more depending upon atmospheric conditions such as limiting there effectiveness in heavy rain as the rain would negate a lot of the plasma's energetic nature.

Still they are the boffin's and I am sure if they think it is viable then it must be.

There are a number of operational systems already in place. Not all of those systems that were talked about in the 80s disappeared.

propaganda is in full swing...

whatever happened to ISIS or ISIL... it all mysteriously disappeared and yet another tiny country which the US can obliterate in a matter of hours poses a global threat, just as another world power is building a strong hold in the south China seas, a massive cargo hub and untapped newly discovered rare earth resources and metals are believed to be in over abundance....

so yea sure... NK is stupid enough to start a war with a country whose largest military base is the size of Pyongyang itself...

As one of the better defense sites pointed out in an article I just read, according to the media and Internet we're seconds away from war with North Korea. The only problem is that no one has told the military this. Dependents and civilians are still in place, regular deployments are on going, and it's business as usual.

The worry would not be if we have first strike capability. We are the strongest and most advanced military on the planet. It is the fact that if there was a large enough EMP blast to render a few states unlivable it would be a nightmare in our own country and we would have to play our cards very carefully. Even if they were not major cities.

Sometimes in a fight you only have to cripple your opponent to achieve your goal. That would be NK taking one for the team known as China.

It would take megaton war heads something North Korea doesn't possess. Kiloton warheads from 35 kilomter's up will have no effect. By the way higher than 35 kilometers won't work even with megaton war heads. Now above a 35 kilometers, the density is too low for much production of Compton scattered electrons and much below 25 kilometers, most of the prompt gammas are absorbed.

Meaning no way anyone but China Russia and the US could pull it off curently.

China and NK are not on the same team. I'm not really sure what makes you think that. Even China wants this guy gone, they are just hedging right now so that they can save face later. Unlike Americans, Asian leaders do tend to have long sighted vision, and they are always thinking about 1 or 2 or 5 generations from now and the ramifications of their actions. That's why they move so slow. It's not that they like NK, it's that it's a delicate situation and Kim has nukes on their border.

Again, I said nothing about a weapon the size of a Tzar bomb. An EMP detonation anywhere in the mainland US would cause such havoc and disarray it would takes months to recover. No communication. No electricity. This is not about the military being prepared it is people like you and me.

The elderly, sick and hospitalized would be the first to go. The first day and the weeks to follow it would only get worse. Lots of medicines need refrigeration. As does food. The US and its average citizen are nowhere near prepared for something like this.

Think what you want. I am simply giving idea for real convesation not whether your beard is green or brown....

People and their cognitive dissonance as to how an EMP would change life as they know it most likely is a hard thing to get people to look at let alone accept the possibility of it ever happening.

Think of those people who are diabetic and can no longer get their meds. Those who have other life threatening illnesses who can no longer get their meds. Grocery stores Pooof gone. No cars. No working sewage. Yea folks, how are you going to flush your toilets let alone draw water? Good God, think of the withdrawal alone of those who will lose their mind that they lost connection to the internet? The zombie apocalypse is no joke. Just watch em when they lose their connection to their hive.

People are worried about nukes when in reality, the biggest threat to the W. World is to take out our power grid.

EMP is not a super weapon, it's the thing that people who know nothing claim is the worst kind of attack.

It would not kill 9/10ths of the US population, like.... EMP would black us out for a week at most. You'd need to change transformers -- unshielded circuit boards, but generators would still work....

Like, Jesus. Emp wouldn't put us in the dark or send us back to the stone age for years, it might put us in sectional dark zones for as much as a few weeks.

EMP creates an opening for a real attack, EMP is not the attack AND the only thing that can cause a massive scale emp is a nuclear warhead....

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, the radiation that rains down on the country would kill us, not the black out.
