One of two scout leaders jailed for seven years today for child sex abuse, had more than 60,000 still images and movies of child porn, a court heard today.

Andrew John Pybus, 32, and Nigel Richard Fenemor, 48, were both jailed for seven years in the High Court at Auckland today. They were told they would serve a minimum non-parole period of three and a half years because the child sex abuse they admitted was so serious.

Pybus admitted representative charges of sexually abusing two boys, one under 12 and one under 16. He also admitted making and importing pornographic material.

Justice Cooper said Pybus had 61,823 pornographic images and that indicated "a consuming, perverted preoccupation".

Both were scout leaders and had a relationship of trust with their victims.

Justice Cooper said he doubted either man fully appreciated the psychological harm they had done to their victims and their families.

Both men expressed remorse for their offending, their lawyers said.

The starting point for both men was 10 years in jail but that would be reduced to seven years each because of their early guilty pleas and other mitigating factors, he said.

Okay - so what 'mitigating factors' could reduce this?? I don't
understand how anything could reduce the sentence of these guys.
Sounds very much like these guys had a porn addiction and they
acted out their addictions. (Porn addiction is very real, and very
dangerous) I hope they 'enjoy' their 7+ years in jail. They are
going to be marked men. (GOOD!!) Other question - do the
scouts do back ground checks on people? I know that at my
church, I had a back ground check done because I'm a CCD
teacher. I would think the scouts would do the same, although
a porn addiction wouldn't come up in a back ground check.

Society's got to get a real tough handle on this sort of thing. I am now in an area where child sexual abuse is quite common. Parents exchange children's virginity for US$ and thereafter, they go down a very very slippery slope and catch aids and pass it on. These creeps should have gotten a lot more time if I had any say on this. It's not easy to apprehend them and whenever there is a successful prosecution, the Courts should throw the book at them and also throw away the keys. Make them examples of deterrent sentencing.

The question I have is, how in the hell do you get to 60,000 images before being caught? I mean Pete Townshend could barely get a whiff before they dropped the hammer on him. Disgusting!

this makes me so sick. I would be more than happy to give up some freedoms so we can go after these guys for real. I don't think these monsters have a nice time in prison either.....give 'em a scarlet "P" and put 'em away

There are NO mitigating circumstances to justify their actions IMO. How can you do anything to children?
The one boy was under 12? I hope that since these vermin, (and I apologize to the rat population for the comparison),get a whopping guaranteed term of 3-1/2 years for screwing these kids up for the rest of their lives, that they are released into the general prison population. People who hurt children don't have very long life spans in the prison world.

To have so many images this guy most has spend all his working time downloading images, how in the world nobody notice that something was not right with him.

All criminals have a first time before they are caught and thus most will pass a backround check.

This is flawed thinking. There is no such thing is deterrent sentencing. Having examples does not deter crime it only drives them to further hide it & it's been said that many children are killed so there are no witnesses because of longer sentences. Yeah I know that makes allot of folks blood boil, but that's the truth.

I wonder if there's any studies as to whether longer sentences have raised the murder rate up for other crimes as well - such as robbery, car jacking etc. Is our approach on crime creating worse crimes & or more crime?

More misinformation. I think the system screws up the kids more then the perpetrators of the crimes. The kids don't have to be screwed up the rest of their lives, but the system is more interested in using the kids to punish the perps than helping the kids. It's that revenge mentality.

While you can argue that it protects other kids in the future from being abused by the perp being prosecuted, the reality is it not only discards the ones who have been abused, but it abuses them further.

Maybe many years ago people who hurt children were punished in prison, but in today's prisons they are all protected by the system. Many prisons are set up just for these type of prisoners, so they all get housed together who are they going to get hurt by? Each other?

Obviously you don't have high speed internet yet marg or you have not downloaded any images. While I don't get into the porn I know where both free legal & illegal stuff resides (usenet) and with my 1.5/1 megabit DSL connection I bet I could download a few thousand images a day. So, in a week or two I too could have over 60 thousand images.

BTW - for those that are not aware the newsgroups (usenet) was around before the World Wide Web (the part of the internet we're using here) it is text only, but executables, graphics, sounds & videos are disassembled & reassembled using utilities. They are the wild west of the Internet because anyone can post & anyone can download and nobody owns or runs them. It is the place that file sharing started & where many trade their illegally made copies of music, games, movies etc.

While Spam has been said to have ruined the newsgroups long before there was spam in email people have learned to filter through the spam there as well, theough I think the last time I looked Spam was about 10 to 1 there.

I can't agree, or disagree with you fully. First off, it is possible to screw up a young mind with this type of abhorrent, vile behaviour. The kids, trusted, and looked up to their leader. He made them do something that they know to be wrong. On the other hand I do believe that the system doesn't help the situation very much, however I don't blame the system for doing the damage - I just blame them for icing the cake.

I agree, it is the most vile act an adult can do. The only thing I disagree with is the life in prison thing - I say give ' em the injection immediately. These people deserve to die.

Good thing them gays aren't in the Scouts. Hahaha, first priests, now scout leaders, how great that all these religous fanatics are doing things that make satans skin crawl. At least he is being punished, unlike the priests who just get shipped around by the church to hide the rapists.

Society has gotten ridiculous. Why is it that people that hurt children or even get their jolly's off children are given such a short period of punishment. I just saw a few hours ago on CNN headline news how two adults (perhaps parents) were arrested for the sexual and physical abuse of a 6 month old baby girl, it's sickening. I wish their were harsher punishments for pedophiles, but I suppose they'll get their own in jail, seeing as how even criminals have a moral code pertaining children and the elderly.

You know it doesn't really matter what happens on this mortal plane because we know it will not be enough thanks to inefficiency of the system. The only justice we know will be brought is by the Lord Himself on their Judgement Day. Have mercy on their corrupted souls.

There are people in jail for alot longer than 7 years for non-violent drug charges such as Marijuana possesson, yet these two are going to spend less than thier full sentence probably before being paroled. For every deviant like this they catch, imagine how many others are out there who are into stuff like this that won't be caught. Teachers, police, caregivers, doctors etc. People who are trusted.

Adults lusting after kids and teens is a big problem, made worse by the apparent ease which they seem to be able to aquire such masses of illegal material. One has to wonder how many of these people will move beyond just looking at pictures and movies and to actually molesting a child or teen.

It's just one of many reasons I don't want any kids.

Exactly what I was thinking marg. He has an addiction.
He must have been spending all his time feeding that
addiction. I'm surprised that there weren't warning
signs (before he let his fantasies spill over into real

Sure, I've lost jobs before from hypersensitive employers because of background checks on my driving record or something. But then I wasn't hiding that. Screw them, if they're that picky. You only hide the really messed up stuff. And those kind of people are better at seeming like "regular Joes" than "regular Joes" on any given day.

Though I agree that these kind of people need psychological help, the only way I would agree with a death sentence is if they killed the children.

The weird thing was like a few weeks ago I came across a child porn website totally unintentionally.

Sure I was looking at adult websites, but they were legit websites that I somehow was redirected to this website.

I just seen a very young child depicted in a sex act. I closed my browser so fast I dont know what website it was.

If this is common in the world I am going to probably become a murderer. As much as it scares me to kill somebody, I just cant stand these things.

Maybe after I kill the first psycho I will get used to it. Then I can go on and kill all the rest of them.

I just wish law enforcement was a little more effective. Actually alot more. At least in this genre of crime. I dont want to hear about it, and I dont want it to happen. And I dont want to go mad and start indiscrimatly profiling people and killing them on the pretense they looked weird and could potentially molest a child or commit crime.

But you cant do nothing. WHich is why this whole thing sucks. I just wish we would figure out genetics and science and kill off the people who are capable of these things. Or at least in the meantime just start profiling people.
