Tonopah Test Range plans more that $12 million in upgrades

Tonopah Test Range has recently received several updates to its telemetry system, and more renovations are on the way, officials said. Telemetry stations gather radio frequency emissions from mock weapons being tested or from the airplanes that carry them, officials said. Tonopah has other instruments, including optical tracking telescopes and radars, that follow a test unit during flight. Tonopah Test Range Manager Brian Adkins said Tonopah Test Range has modernized the telemetry sensors, recording and encryption equipment to meet its mission needs.

Note that Brian Adkins is still listed as Range Manager, though he probably is the base commander since he is USAF (could be ex) and not DOE. As a reminder, the TTR is used jointly by the DOE and USAF. If you start at the link below, you can look at the various documents indicating who is in charge of the TTR.

If someone knows how to tell if a person is currently in the USAF, that would probably nail Adkins status.

The "optical sensors" mentioned in the article are cinetheodolites.

The USGS topo maps have the cinetheodolite locations marked, though labeled under the manufacturers name of Contraves.

Note I never bothered to verify these markings, though you could just look on Google Earth for a white spot.

The article mentions that the goal is to operate the "sensors" remotely. This may be to reduce the Sandia footprint at the base.

According to his Linkedin profile, Adkins has worked for Sandia National Laboratories since leaving the Air Force in March 2012. He manages the Sandia portion of TTR. The AF portion is run by Det 3, AFTC.

How is it known Det 3 runs the USAF part of the TTR?

Does the base commander of Groom Lake also command the TTR?
