So Trump tweets out that transgender people will not be allowed to be in military. Republican law makers line up to say, "He's Commander in Chief, so
it's totally up to him."
WHAT THE HELL?
Transgenders cannot enlist.
The ban has always been there.
In 2015 it was reported that Ash Carter had lifted the ban. He had not.
And he never did.
change was that already enlisted transgenders could 'come out' and formally begin a process of registration as their identified
gender, and in the meantime a study analysing what it would mean in terms of cost, combat readiness etc would go on.
It was supposed to take six month.
It was extended.
A year later in 2016 the study was still 'underway' and got formally extended into the first term of the next administration effectively - and
conveniently some might say -making it a case of Someone Else's Problem.
And all the while Transgendered people could STILL not enlist.
It is that study that (apparently) have now been concluded, and the ban will be upheld. Trump did not introduce the ban, he is upholding it.
Edit: Actually, Politico informs, the study had NOT been concluded but was expected to still take 'months'.
The gravest issue here is that already enlisted transgendered soldiers were encouraged to come forth, and now that the ban will be upheld they could
be in real trouble.
Personally I do not agree with the ban but before we lynch Trump for not lifting the ban, let us then remember that Obama had eight years to lift the
