If such an event were to pretty much reduce us back to being nothing more than Hunter / Gatherers, then we are basically starting our civilization all over again.

Some might think that's not a bad thing.

Well, it's highly unlikely that such an event would completely and utterly destroy our capability to rapidly rebuild, and as you say, it might not be a bad thing. Europe and Japan got pounded pretty hard in WWII, and on the rubble they were rebuilt with much better electronics, communications, transportation and other systems.

Same problem all the time, whether it's technology or physical evolution. If you're static too long, you become vulnerable. So the best thing to have is periodic but not complete destruction upon which a society or species can continue to build and grow.

Yeah, we don't need the universe to get us,only its corrupt influence and inspiration.

Keep in mind how long one sun orbit around its gravity hub takes, and how far we've went so far. Now imagine how long that galactic nucleus orbit around its hub takes. We are very small and Earths existence commenced in between one tread gap of a rotating tire, the same gap it will cease in. The influence of the vitreous energy from the core demands this fate of the physical world.

So Elon Musk has warned facebook about their AI and to use extreme caution, it seems Facebook AI had to be taken off line because it developed its own language to communicate amongst AI . This is probably whats going to happen. Itll be Terminator and SkyNet

Who needs powerpoint when you have ATS? S&F.

What I will point out is a GRB (gamma ray burster) is bipolar and only shoots in two directions, so if we aren't in the crosshairs we would be fine, however i've read that if any GRB at least a thousand years away was pointed at us then it's good night dolly. As for wandering black holes it's not so much of a problem unless we crash head on into one, in fact it has been theorized advanced civilizations may use accretion disks to harness energy without getting pulled beyond the event horizon.

As for Fermi's paradox I think we should apply Occam's razor: space is just too vast. Some like CSETI think that real time communications is possible, which is just daydreaming because a signal from a star system a thousand light years would've been sent a thousand years ago-think of it as sending a text message and have to wait two thousand years for a response. It would take the rewriting of Einstein's laws to allow interstellar communication to take place.

But perhaps there are advanced civilizations out there and we may get a signal, but the poignant thing to remember is that civilization could've been annihilated centuries or even millennia before we got the 's'up?'

Ah, AI taking over the world.

This is going to be mentioned in my next thread. If it is an actual AI that becomes self aware, even if it kills off all the organic intelligent life, it simply means it replaced it and would it it's own form of intelligent life. It would still "count" and intelligent life being out there.

I always feel like face to face is more likely to occur than one just calling us up over 100-1000 light years.
