Herbert Lee Stivers was just 19 years old and guarding Nazi Hermann Goering when he was approached by two men. The men claimed that Goering was sick and needed medicine. According to Stivers, it was he who unwittingly delivered the note and the fountain pen that held a capsule he believed to be medicine. He now believes that the "medicine" was the cyanide that Goering committed suicide with.

A former guard at the Nuremberg trials has come forward to say he believes he provided the poison that Nazi Hermann Goering used to commit suicide hours before his scheduled execution for war crimes, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

Herbert Lee Stivers, now 78, was a 19-year-old Army private when he took notes and a capsule hidden inside a fountain pen to Goering at the request of two men who said the notorious Nazi general was "a very sick man" who needed medicine, the newspaper said.

Stivers said he is now convinced the "medicine" was the cyanide that killed Goering on Oct. 15, 1946, the night before he was to be executed. The commander of the German air force had been convicted at the Nuremberg trials the previous month.

Army records do show that he was a guard at Nuremberg during the trials, but there is no confirmation beyond that. The Army maintains that the cyanide was kept in a body cavity or inside the rim of the toilet. But as Stivers points out, why wait so long to take it and risk its discovery? There is no indication that Stivers is trying to drum up hype for a book etc. so what would his motives be for coming foreword?

Well he is pretty old now and maybe he is afraid that his days are numbered, so he decided to come forward with the discovery. It is uncommon for these kind of things to come so late into public view, maybe he was afraid of neo-nazis or someone who might endanger him.
