As predicted, some people forget their lofty fulminations about preserving liberties and personal freedoms, and instead turn into gloating authoritarians when the liberty-infringers are wearing red ties.

This is easy! Bring on more and more civil forfeiture!
The same way the "occasional" (albeit extremely rare) person gets mistakenly convicted of a crime and serves jail time, there will be the occasional time when this doesn't go perfectly. However, the vast majority of the times it goes exactly as planned - criminals lose their stuff.

According to these figures. around 58 per cent of arrested suspects are released without trial (so they aren't convicted), and of the 42 per cent that appear in court around two-thirds are convicted.

So if each of these arrests also resulted in seizure of the suspect's belongings, that would be around 60 per cent of all arrestees ending up broke and/or homeless, despite being innocent.

This is hard to reconcile with your claim that forfeiture goes 'exactly as planned' on the 'vast majority of times'. In fact, it suggests that you are just making stuff up to please yourself.
